Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,
I observed white stains on Angelfish lately. They're not dots but when I look in detail their scales come off. My angles dark metallic colour and looks like their skin/scales are scratched.

Any reason/ideas what might be the cause?:(

Cheers

Are they behaving normally? have you checked your water- Am, No2, No3 & PH? could be mucus thickening from irritation caused by water quality or parasites much easier to see this on black fish, black mollys are used alot for this, have you had them long, what filtration do you have, what is your maintainance regime?

Hi, thanks for your message.

I checked the water p.h 7.5 and ammonia 0. I do weekly around %30 water changes and clean the internal filter every fortnightly. I have juwel internal filter and tetratec external filter. I haven't replaced any filter sponges since I have bought them(3 months ago).

I had the angels for about a month now, they all behave and eat normally.

If they are eating and behaving normally i wouldnt be too concerned, but do keep and eye on them! Good to see you have 2 filters! IMO, I would alternate the cleaning on the filters every 2 weeks, as this will keep one running at 100% (bacteria levels alive). On the juwel filter i would replace the white pad every week (this is a prefilter), the black sponge every 3-4 weeks (this is carbon), the first blue sponge every 2-3 months and the bottom blue sponge 5-6 months. On the external i would replace the white pad every 2 weeks (if you have large messy fish weekly), the granular \"beads\" in the bag monthly (again carbon), the black sponges rinse in aquarium water 1-2 months and wash the bio-rings (hula hoops) in aquarium water every 4-6 months, just to get the heavy mulm off them, rough guide, works for us and hundreds of customers! If sponges get really clogged with dirt, replace them, as dirt will restrict water flow, reducing oxygen levels, vital for benifical filter bacteria, just dont replace them all at once!!

I might be barking up the wrong tree here, but do you have other fish in with the Angels? - I'm especially thinking of any sort of Plecostomus-type sucking fish, Red Tail/Red Fin Sharks, those dreadful Siamese Algae Eaters - even Otocinclus will 'graze' on the likes of Angels and other more sedentary Cichlids...that would leave marks on the black stripes of your Angels, I've observed this on several occasions...the scales grow back and the black pigment returns in a few days. All I would suggest is to watch your fish very closely, if at all possible after the light(s) is/are switched off as it is after 'lights out' that the Plecs etc become most active.
Just a thought...

Hi, thanks for all the advice.

Serratus I will change the pad/and sponges of the filter this weekend. It will defnielty make a difference.

John, you're not definetly barking on the wrong tree.I tell you why.. I have small(1 inch) plec and Red Tail Shark and Chine Algae eater. I do realize that especially red tail black shark hoovers around the other fish as if \" smelling them\".. but if what you're saying is true than RTBS is actually not innocently smelling them. Also I have blue lights(giving dark moon light effect) and sometimes I leave them on all day. That may cause RTBS become quite active as it may hink it's night time(moon is out).

Angels are behving and eating normally, even they respond to my presence.. but it's just the black scales are off and you scan see the metallic skin..

i'll definetly keep my eye on them.. Thank you all.
