Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I just came across this petition - it might be worth looking at and signing?

I don't belive that the negative effects of fouridation have been proven. We've had fluoride in the water in Ireland for many years and I don't believe it has negatively impacted the fishkeeping hobby. On the positive side, there is definitive scientific evidence that it has reduced tooth decay.

It's one of those things that will be debated for many years to come.

Regards,

Ken.

You're right of course Ken, I just thought it worth making the petition available for all to see and make their own judgement.
We had fluoride in the water supply where I lived in England for as long as half a century - possibly longer - and often the water from the tap would have a distinct smell, and taste of bleach - rather like Anthony described a couple of days back...
It's irrelevant to me as my water here comes out of the ground with Lord only knows what extras!!! They've been spreading slurry all around the house since the rain stopped and with the water table so high just now some of it MUST be getting into my well...but that, as they say, is a different story.

Replied by Anthony (Anthony) on topic Re:Fluoride in Irish Water...
If I rememebr correctly Floride is also dangerous to fish but will dissipate over
five days. I could be wrong.

This could, of course - in the UK case - have actually been caused by an excess of chlorine...all I can say is that is was most unpleasant when that occurred, no water changes until it had passed!!!

I can vaguely recall part of a conversation I had with an eminent fish breeder a good few years back in which he told me the 'jury was still out' in the case of fluoride, though.

I know my tap water smells like a swimming pool at the moment I thought it was chlorine but it could be a miture of flouride aswell. I vaguely remember them talking on the news a while back about increasing the amount of flouride in the water but like everything else in this country they probably sneaked it in when we werent looking.

I know my water has been off the wall for a little while the ph is up and down. I have been dechlorinating the strenght for chloramines and it seem to be better but I dont know much about flouride except that the fishs teeth will be nice and white and decay free...
