Popeye----please help
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Came home this evening to discover one of my fish has popeye.....my black female molly has recently been unwell and it began about 3 weeks ago with some fin rot that I got rid of by using Melafix. She was much better after a week of treatment but then I noticed some see thru poop from her. I did alot of regular water changes and the water parameters are all fine. Then today I come home to see that her left eye is popped out and seems to have some whiteness inside the swollen almost bubble like case around the eye.She is swimming around fine but it looks awful. All the other fish are fine, i did introduce a new plant to the tank yesterday but I dont think this is the problem as this fish has appeared to be ill for about 3 weeks now. Can anyone help me please ? I think it could be some type of parasite, particularly with the transparent poo ?
Any suggestions please?
Gavin

There are are numerous causes of pop-eye. Quarantine and treatment with interpet No9 should work provided it hasn't gone too far, after that you would need some stronger anti biotics. Clean water, wipe downs and immaculate tank conditions are essential. As for the internal problems, you would need to use a wormer of some kind..

Adam, thanks for the help. Im putting the quarantine tank up now. Ive not had it running at all lately so have pulled it out and giving it a good clean, adding boiled water and will let it cool before adding the sick fish. I know Im running the risk of putting the fish into a tank that isnt cycled, but as you said if I do regular water changes then it should improve the fish's chance of surviving this. I expect to have the fish into the tank by midnight once the temperature goes down! Should I just add cold water to it or am I running the rish of introducing chloring then? Sorry for all the stupid questions,Im still learning as Ive already mentioned! I have some dechlorinater drops here. Ive also taken the gravel out of the tank,I think its better to leave no substrate in,I have a fake plant that could provide some cover for her.

Hi Gavin,
Are you using any plant food in the tank?
high in nitrogen?
are there any other signs of bubbles under the scales.
i am probably of the mark here but just to be sure.

No to either Mickey, no bubbles under the scales and no plant food either. The bubble itself is almost fungus like in its appearance, slighty white but seems swollen. Im about to place her into a quarantine tank. The tank isnt cycled but desparate measures and all that!

Well the first night of the emergency Quarantine tank has passed. The eye seems to have reduced in size and doesnt look as raw (remember there seemed to be a jelly like fungus on it yesterday). The heater is abit of a nuisance as it has no temperature guage,so you have to adjust it manually to get the right temperature and Im flying solo on the main tank now as my 2nd thermometer broke (dont worry not in the tank),so must get another 2 thermometers now today. The parameters are fine on the quarantine tank,no nitrates and no nitrites. I got up early this morning and did a partial water change of about 20%. Also fed her food, with pump turned off so little waste would be pushed to bottom but inevitably there was some that she may avail of later. Pump now back on,and will do another 20% change tonight, must try to get some Interpet No 9 if possible. Adam what was the name of the worming med that I should dose the main tank with.(I'll increase the main tanks temp to 30c tonight once I get the thermometer!).

Thanks Adam,I'll give the pet shop a shout later to see if they have the meds. Will do another 20% water change tonight, the poor fish wont know what happening with all these water changes! However at least she has a fighting chance now of surviving.
Will keep you posted on her later.

Dosed the quarantine tank last night after doing another 25% water change. Looked at her this morning and she appears to be slighty gasping on the surface, her gills appear slighty white. The popeye has gone thankfully.its still looking slighty sore but the swelling is gone down alot. I will do another 20% water change tonight. She is no longer eating now, Things look bad for her at present but I will wait and see,she is still swimming around fine but she looks v thin and beaten.

Well unfortunately as feared she kicked the bucket overnight. She was struggling last night with a lot of white appearance around her gills. She wasnt taking food either and seemed v beaten looking. I did a water change etc...Nonetheless thanks to everyone who helped (Especially Adam). At least 2 positives to come from it! 1. No more fry as she was the sole female molly in the tank (Altho I need to move the molly fry which are 3 /4 months old there now, presume they cant breed yet at that age) and 2. Im heading away for the weekend so managed to teach herself how to do a water change for me in the event the fish was still alive,so at least she knows for future reference! Hehe!
