Bronze catfish sick / unusual?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi All,
Being watching my bronze catfish today and he / she is behaving abit different than usual. Today (lets call it a \"he\"), he is swimming in the middle of the tank mainly. Normally he is bottow dwelling with the occasional visit to the surface for a gulp of air which is normal for them to do. More interesting or indeed worringly is the fact that his fin appear to be clamped. The pectoral fins and the pelvic fins only that is. They almost resemble small paddles as they arent extended like usual. He is eating fine etc.
I have two other bronze cats in the tank and they are behaving fine. The temp hasnt changed either and is at 26c. One other thing is I added a plant about 5 weeks or so ago and the plant appears to be getting eaten from within the leaves. The outline of the leave is left almost like a skelton, its seethrough with the green eating away. I dont think any of the fish in the tank would do this altho my hong kong pleco may be a suspect? Im thinking of getting rid of the plant now.
Anyone able to shed some light on this unusual occurence with my corys (who happen to be my fav).
Gavin
On a sidenote,Im after finally painting the study room and Im ready to begin my tetra tank in the coming days / weeks ! I hope to keep a photo diary of it also.

Look forward to see your photo diary on the Tetra tank, have you thought about holding it back and submitting it as an article in the competition?? Just a suggestions.
Regarding the plant, I know nothing about plants so I can't help. About the strange behaviour of the cory, frequent mid water swimming for a bronze is unusual and a sign of something wrong, fins clampped is definitely a bad sign. If you can not detect any physical signs of a problem I would do a larger than normal water change and see if things improve, also check you ammonia and nitrate, nitrite levels before the water change. Lets know what happens and we will see what to do next. I can't imagine it is related to the plant, but some one else may know different and post here.

Is your corry the largest of the tree and it's swiming close to the glass? Not really a corry fan but usually when mine used to swim(faster) in the midd water beside the glass with only the abdominals clamped they use to lay eggs.
If the pectorals are clamped may be water quality, check your ph first. If your plant is a cryptocoryne the ph will be the cause of the \"melting\" as well. If ph is fine check further for amonia, nitrites, nitrates. If this are ok, may be parasites, if things don't get back to normal I whould treat for worms.
