Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

The history , I'm new to this , tank running for 3 weeks , have had some deaths , but water quality seems fine ( had it double cjhecked in LFS). I lost a Sunset Platy during the week , thought that I saw small bubbles on the skin , but saw nothing when I fished it out of the tank .
Now my 4 Black Phantom Tetra seem to have white dandruff , I didn't see this this morning when feeding . What is it ?

this may have been caused by not cycling your filter. if so i made the same mistake with my first tank. if you are unfamiliar with the term cycling let us know and we'll explain it. first things first.
how long after after you got your tank did u add fish and how many?
do you have water test kits?
are u dechlorinating your water with stress coat or similar product?

MOST likely it is caused by new tank symdrome. ie. adding too many fish too fast. if this is your 170 litre tank you have only got a filter in there since 10 days so generally this is not enough time for the "good" bacteria to multiply and infest your filter. without these bacteria present to break down the amonia caused by fish breathing and shitting , and the food u add, there can be ammonia and nitrite spikes.
please test your water again a and post results like this:
temp:
ph:
ammonia: x ppm
nitrite: x ppm
nitrate: x ppm
also it sounds like u added too many fish at once so a list and size of your fish would help also.

all fish carry parasties, but generally they have a strong immune system to fend them off, but when they become stressed it becomes weak and they are much more suseptable to diseases. this can be physical (getting fins nipped/attacked etc) or environmental (water quality). what other fish are in your tank? what are you testing for? how old is your testkit?

What was the temperature before. Raise it above 28c this will kill the whitespot. Lave it at this for a week and add an airstone to the tank. I never use a treatment for whitespot but have not seen it in years. Only had it once. If you fish are not able to take the high temperature then Protozin is about the best.
