Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Sorry Bren I can't help but I have moved the query to the health section and amended the title to attract more attention, I am sure someone will reply some.

The more information you can provide, like Serratus said the easier it will be to try and diagnose the problem and help.

the first signs of a health problem with fish is loss of appetite and loss of colour and listless behavior. if the discus still has good colour it is a good sign as they turn very dark with the onset of any illness. lying on the bottom sounds grim but he may have suffered an minor injury of some sort or been fighting, if so he should recover.
check the water ph etc. and esp. temp.
anyway how is he today.

30 tanks specialise in african cichlids, angelfish and various catfish

Hi Bren, temp. is low IMO for discus, they will live at this temp but harder to keep as alot of the "nasties" prefer low temps, best kept at 30oC-32oC as the "nasties" cannot live at higher temps. How long have you had it? where are you based? if you could bring it up to me at Aquatic Village, i could do a harmless skin scrape, we can then look to see if it has any external parasites etc.
If you cant, my advise would be raise the temp to 34oC for a few days, then down to 30-32oC, keep the water well airated as warmer water holds less oxygen, keep observing it and see if it helps. Can you post up the water parameters just so we can see them? Have you tested Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate and PH? All very important!!!!!

Hi Bren. If you are using mains water from the tap the parameters can change without you realising.
It is important to monitor your water. It may seem like the best thing to do is water changes but if the water had been say pH 6.5 for a long time then suddenly one day it changes to pH 8.5 you wont notice but the fish will be in for a shock.
Just something to think about.

NH3 and NH4 levels are almost zero,pH 7.0,and fish still unable to support itself in H20,some signs of white spots appearing on skin ,possiblly due to a snail attack. The fish is dark now but colour cobalt blue still good.:S

Trail of poop could mean internal hexamita, I tried curing my fish years ago with melafix and frequent water changes. Else you would probably need flagyl or metronidazoel
