Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hi in the same vein as the altermafix post I just wondered if anyone had ever put malachite green into their tank in raw form.. By this I mean rocks. I know a lot of the medicines contain it and it is ususally found where copper is present and copper is used in marine medicines. I just wondered if you put the stones/rocks of it into a tank would it work as a general tonic by leaching into the water.

Any thought would be great. We have all gone alternative remedy mad but hey the old wives probably were on to something....

thanks
nessa

hi Ian. yes its raw form but polished. I got them in a rock and bead shop. They are not definitely not varnished but they are polished. I need to have a better look at them as I am sure whatever they were polished with is not good for fish but maybe I could sand them down myself and then there would only be raw rock to leach.

I have put polished stones into my tanks before and they were definitely not varnished either. They were chips of all kinds of stone like amethist, malachite, quartz and a mix of others. I never had trouble with them and they look nice too.

Just thought it might be a good way to mix health care with aesthetics. I have had too much bad luck with chemicals and I really think that a lot of the problems that I am having is as a result of adding chemicals

Makes sense Nessa...that reminded me of zeolithe when I was looking for aesthetics and good water maintenance. If its natural Malachite I think its should do what it should - would be good to use in lower temp set-up where the ich is more active - or if you already have infected fish.

I whould definetly not add it to my tank. Malachite green is toxic. Is used as an antiseptic or as an antifungal for fish only in diluted form. If you have a rock of malachite, that is gonna change colour in water anyways, and I whould not add it if I have any inverts couse it have lot's of copper in it.

This is the third time I have replied to this thread, I keep getting distracted before I press submit!!

Goldy the stone you have is only called Malachite because of the colour, I am almost 100% positive that it does not contain any of the chemical malachite green. IF it did I would not be adding it to the tank anyway, Malachite GReen is a carcinagen and should only be used when absolutely required and in controlled doses.

Good advice above... alot of meds are based on malachite green but ONLY have a percentage of it, i would be very careful using it in its raw form!!! Agree with Daragh its prob. colour why it called MG...

A couple of years ago I brought over 2X1KG of the neat dry form, enough to treat an olympic swimming pool, the ITFS president was to safely split it down:unsure: (from the dry form dangerous form) , it best to handle it only is solution form and use gloves, enough should be added to a 4 foot tank to notice from front to back a very slight green colour, when you look through the tank length ways (through 4 feet of water it should be quite noticable the green colour but not has dence as pea green pond water. Threat ever second day for 8 days and it will kill fungus and an array of protozoa, go easy on the level of dosage with (loaches, teras F/W)and (wrasses, anthias, eels S/W) .

This can be brought over the shelf as coasapur from Sera aquatics products or over the internet from aquatic suppliers.

That would be a ecumenical matter!!!

Nessa
normally when the stones are polished there are no substances added (chemicals or otherwise) AFAIK...they are put into a machine and tumbled together the action of the stones rubbing on one another tend to polish themselves, much like the stones on a riverbed. You have probably bought some malachite the semi precious stone ...Malachite green the chemical is only called thus because of the colour of the chemical is similar to the stone ...2 different chemical compositions...

I have never used it neat but have used medications based on it to great effect. A dangerous but highly effective treatment for many ailments.
