Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I've decided to go south American. I got my first Oscar last weekend, he's between 7 and 8 inches. I rehomed my africans with a friend of mine so I put him in the tank with my gold severum and pleco. I hope to have my new tank in a couple of weeks, I'm thinking of a vision 460. Anyway, the day after I brought him home I noticed the edges of his fins were turning a lighter colour. By the third day they were becoming frayed and torn looking. I'm thinking fin rot, I have no experience with this illness so am just assuming from what i've read. No idea it could take hold so quickly. I've put him in a hospital tank and treated it with anti fungal and fin rot. Is there anything else I could do? how long will it be before I can put him back into the main tank?. I've checked the water and everything is and was fine so I'm assuming it was the move.

Hey Dalay,
Have you noticed the Severum giving any abuse to the Oscar?
that would've been my first guess but then again it could be fin rot...
if it is fin rot you can add a little salt while you're treating.
vision 450 is pretty good size for these guys:) .

I'm pretty sure that its fin rot. Can I add normal saxa table salt or does it have to be aquarium salt. My head is wrecked I've wanted one of theses fish for ages and now this.

you can use untreated salt or for safety aquarium salt.
they're pretty tough fish hopefully it'll recover quick enough...
maybe check your water levels if you haven't already.
let us know how he' getting on:) .

he was probably nipped by the severum as oscars are a bit timid and sulky when first introduced. it's unlikely thats it's fin rot.
just treat him with salt and he'll soon heal up. when re introducing him, move the decorations around and maybe catch the severum
into a bucket for a few minutes to even things up a bit. neither are particularly agressive and they should be fine when they get used to each other.

about a tablespoon to every 40 litres should be enough to aid healing and prevent secondary infection in this case.
looking at your picture, it certainly looks like jagged bitemarks. finrot would look more even along the fin.
