Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Fungus on my cory?

Hi all, hoping you can help me out. I have 4 sterbai cory . 3 of them are adults and tonight Ive noticed what appears to be some type of fungus on them. All are eating fine still, but I suspect there has been something on these fish for a week or two now, they hang out towards the back of the tank and its hard to see them alot of the time, but tonight Ive seen the fungus on at least two of them. Its not a very visible fungus but it is visible when you view it close up,also appears slightly lumpy perhaps.(could be the fungus though). In one of them it looks as though the fish has what appears to be a slight flesh wound near its head, very slight but again there is a fungus near it also.
Im mindful that there are corys, so what do I need to do next ?
Ive not added any new fish to the tank recently and have these particular fish for about a year now. Water seems fine, all other fish are doing well.
What should I do now to treat this?

Gavin

Hi Gavin. You dont mention where the "fungus" is. Is it on the fins, head, barbels, flanks etc.
Are the fish flicking or scratching? Are they less active than normal?
If it is possible can you remove one of them and take a clear picture.
It may be something other than fungus. IMO if you treat for fungus and it is something else you could weaken the fishes immune system wick could make things worse instead of better.

That sounds exactly the same thing as happened my Cory sterabi

I treated it with melafix and it cleared up after one weeks treatment of this. The fins never quite grew back perfectly but the fish are healthy and happy. Treat as soon as you can as their little barbles around their mouth may fall off completly if not treated early making the search for more difficult than it needs to be.
Hope it works for you

i have noticed this and other health problems with cory sterbai in the last year or so. they are being intensively bred (inbred) in asia and eastern europe and their immune system is very weak. the fungus is usually secondary. try to isolate the affected fish and treat with melafix. this should ease the problem and allow the fish to recover and fight the infection.

As Derek said, fungus is a secondary infection..... AFAIK fungus doesnt attack "healthy" tissue, so its either a wound caused by parasites, bacterial infection or an actual wound by a net etc.....
Corys. dont ship well, its a well known fact and sterbai amongst others can emmit a toxic "fluid" which is a sort of self destruct when stressed!!!

most health problems in corys have a bacterial cause. they are rarely bothered too much by parasites and due to body armour, only eyes and fins are normally subject to injury or attack.
newly imported corys are initially a bit delicate and prone to bacterial infection(i always treat with melafix as a precaution) but once settled are hardy.
but chronically inbred fish are weak and regularly succumb to bacterial and even other types of infection.
sterbai are the 2nd most popular and commonly kept corydoras species and therefore they are being comercialised to death as livebearers are/were.
anyway gavin your fish should recover with melafix and temporary isolation/quarantine.

I was thinking Melafix but one of them appears to have a slight flesh wound so Im going to try some Esha 2000, while being a scaleless fish I presume its ok to treat with same.

how is your cory doing? Noticed same thing with one of mine yesterday, just above his barbels or at least where barbels should be.(he did not have them when I got him several months ago and was doing fine until now.

Well onto the last day of treatment, I had to add an airstone to the tank as they were very lacklustre and I had a job getting the temp down on the tank.
Its hard to say if its working as I dont want to distrupt them now.
