red swollen gills

Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I need a bit of help please. I have a 6" bala shark with a red swollen gill. I have treated before with sterazin but it is back again. They are a skittish fish and I know he has hit the glass a few times lately and he has a bruise on his nose just wondered if this is an indication to someone of flukes or such like. I love these fish and I want to treat him correctly. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Any chance of a pic? Perhaps the bruising could be a tumour developing? Ive seen it happen on occassions with some of my chilids so presume it can happen bala's also.

I will try to get a shot of it. Apart from my skills as a photographer being slightly well crap the balas are hard to catch to get a shot of. but I will try. How did you deal with the tumours your cichlids got and was it fatal or did they live with them.
thanks

Alot of them subsided over the months but ultimately all died within a few months of them first appearing, tumours arent really treatable as such. The fish dont tend to suffer much, continue eating but eventually colour and size fades and well they pass away then. I dont know if yours have that.Id catch it in a net and get some pics if I was you.

could be an injury and/or infection. dos'nt sound like flukes. i recommend a salt bath and treat with a mild disenfectant such as melafix or if you have the organic health treatment. (i have seen fish recover from terrible injuries and infections when treated with organic)
is the bala kept with frogs?
30 tanks specialise in african cichlids, angelfish and various catfish

HI Derek No the bala is in a 240 litre community tank with barbs rainbows tetras loach and plecs. They seem to be very lively and chasing each other a lot but it was never as fast and furious before and the one with the swollen gill has a black nose from hitting the glass. I will treat with melafix and see how we get on. I just dont want to do nothing and see him floating one morning when I come down. I think what you have said sort of confirms that it is an injury and not something more sinister I just wanted to make sure that it wasnt some nasty bug.
Thanks for the reply
