Fish hiding?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi guys,I have a male trewvasae(about 80mm long) who is not looking well,he's been off his food and hiding for at least 4 days,he seems to be gasping all the time, idont know if he got a beating or has some illness,my water parameters are good except my nitrate is allways high, its 40+ from the tap so is on the high side, the water has been cloudy this past week but i think thats down to the end of a pack of flake food, its a bit dusty but its grand for some young lab fry,my water maintanience is good with about 30pc change every week along with regular cleaning, none of my other fish have a problem, here's a few short vids and if anyone can spot something or have any ideas they might pass them on,regards

Not sure whats wrong with the fish - but I'd be inclined to look at the nitrates as a cause, and as an issue in any case, especially in a rift tank.
I've recently started using JBL Clearmec plus - its only a tenner a box - which will last about 3 months - that's only 10c a day. Might be worth looking at this or any nitrate reducing resin, since you water changes aren't diluting it.
Jim.

the nitrite is an issue allright but as i have no other fish in trouble inc 13 trewvasae fry and a mature female it could be anything,i must order some food from zooplus and I will order that jbl clearmec and see how things go,i will strip the tank in the morning and put him in an isolation tank and see how he gets on,thanks jim

malawis rarely suffer with parasite or bacterial infection except when newly imported, so the most likely cause of fish cowering or gasping is reduced oxygen and/or reduced water quality. check water temperature as malawis dont do well with high temp in smallish tanks and the bigger fish react first if this is the case.
the fish in video looks in a bad way and is unlikely to recover fully unless drastic action is taken. organic aqua health treatment is a great asset in dealing with problems such as you are experiencing. it can be used independently and can often have amazing results. most retailers stock it.
good luck with the fish and hope he recovers.
