Tank finally cycling....!!!!
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all,
Finally after a long weekend of washing gravel and some "small leak issues" finally have my tank cycling.
I diceded to go and use fertz this time i used 20l of the JBL Proflora start. Also went ahead and bought 2 250watt pro themp basis. Done a little reseach on it and was curious too see if they actually work so i will keep you updated on the results...!!!
For substrate i used 30L of JBL manado. Looks great really natural feel to it but it is a nightmare to clean.
Ill be hooking up the Co2 over the next week, which will be a DIY job with a ph controller that ive used before on other tanks.
In the sump ive 4 chambers still havnt decided on the media ill be using but i will be using some kind of peat to soften the water.
Ill be aquascaping the tank hopefully this week so should have some pics up by the weekend of the first attempt.
Alan

JBL manado is a nightmare to clean Really? In what way?
I just got some from a friend and haven't put in my tank yet but after reading your post I might not
Is it because its light and might get sucked up when Syphoning?

If you can empty the tank put the manado in then refill the tank slowly you shouldnt have any problems with it.
I put i a small bucket in the tank on its side ran the hose into it and the tank was crystal clear.

Alan using Co2 with a sump dosent really work.
Once the water goes down in to the sump the Co2 quickly leaves the water.
You wont be able to keep a good level of Co2 in the water no matter how much you try.
Its a bit like having a filter return flowing across the surface of the water for gas exchange. Except the gas that is leaving the tank is the Co2 that you are trying to keep in the water.
Using a sump will do the same thing.
If you use the sump you would be better of using liquid carbon. Not quite the same as using Co2 gas.

Manado is sick....good sick, not the other kind, I love the stuff, for things like carpeters it's fabulous, I find the circulation of oxygenated Water through it is great.
Does what it says on the Bag.
