Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Wild Swordtails would be a great project.....that's the sort of stuff that floats my boat.

Maybe it's the fish snob in me, but I really like the idea of swordtails that actually ARE swordtails and not a hybrid. And I suspect there'll be plenty of takers for the young 'uns

What's doubly frustrating is how easy it would be the acquire them if I was living in the US. There's a guy on Aquabid selling 9 juvies for $16+delivery. Unfortunately he doesn't trade outside America and even if he did, the cost would be deleterious

My Vision180 is now a cave tetra tank; cold, dark and best viewed at night. There's no heater, subdued lighting and even then it's only on 4-5 hours of the day. It's filtered by a JBL Crystalprofi e901 and a 600lph overhead sump with ceramic and sintered glass media and pots of pothos plants to reduce nitrates.
I have a Trigon190 set up as a firemouth tank. They were sold as Thorichthys ellioti but the more I look, the more I'm convinced they're Thorichthys meeki. They're still young so maybe time will tell. Either way they're looking great. I've moved my diamond tetras in with them and there's an L066 and a royal whiptail lurking in there as well. There's an Aquael 500 powerhead witha big sponge filtering it and I removed the Juwel light fitting and for now it's lit by a 9w light. It's nowhere near as dark as the cave tank but the lighting gives it much more of a jungle river-bottom feel.
Tonight I'm setting up a dedicated Corydoras panda tank, just rocks, fine sand and some java fern. Another Aquael 500 filtering it, with a little peat too. I'll have a heater in it but given that they prefer cooler water and my study is usually at a civilized enough temperature, it'll be more of a failsafe than anything else. There'll also be an overhead sump with plants in it on top too.
The tank the cories are going into was initially set up as a hillstream biotope. Unfortunately my grandson saw fit to try and feed the Vietnamese white clouds and figured they looked hungry enough to eat the whole tub! I've started that project over, this time in a 65L tank with a hillstream manifold. The pump is 600lph and keeping in mind that the rocks will reduce water volume somewhat, I reckon it'll turn the water over 12-15 times an hour. The pumping system I had for the larger tank was 2000lph but I think if I'd used that in a 2 foot tank, the backblast from it would have been a disaster. The white clouds will be going back into it, along with a few Amano and bamboo shrimp and hopefully some Sewellia lineolata loaches.
Other than that I have a Rio180 community tank set up in my parents' place, 2 empty 60L tanks that I haven't decided what to do with (or where to hide them!
