Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

30L Nano. New Project

ok. so this i my third tank now.
As recently replaced my 30 nano scape with 60L, now decided not leave it in shed
to collect dust. Today new tank layout created. Only hardscape for fe weeks. I still
need to decide what plants I would like to see in. Used available rock and wood
from previous scapes. Do not mind the pink rail. as this DIY thing needs to be completed.
About tank:
Capacity: 30L
Ligt: Beamswork 600Lumens LED's
Soil: ADA
Filter: Planning to spin it with one of my old Eheim 2213
I still need to complete the scpe. Will get some white gravel or something at fold in front, just
before where the rocks and wood starts.
Have no clue what live stock it will hold. Will see whats available with my LFS when I will be ready
to spin it up. Defo some group of tiny-fancy fishes.
I still have no clue about what plants will go in. I need to search out for some growing
partly dipped in water. I would like to see that piece of wood outside the box wrapped
up with some creeping plant (any good suggestions welcome). And something green
trying to escape the tank on top-right corner. Never tried something like, so this will
be a new experience for me.
NOTE: Does anyone have spare white or light in color fine gravel? I could buy it or you could donate it?
I need only about 3 cups of it. please
ohh yeah.. I like now my dinning room much. My wife said this is too much for her.
I guess she needs a time..

soooo.. the rail is done.
I'd say I'm proud of myself. lol

Cost me nothing. Just a time to find
a bits and pieces in my shed and attic
the rail itself came from dissembled old bed tent-cover
of one alike:
So it was just a matter of fact to get few pieces together, drill the holes, and adjust the
LED unit itself with hooks.
as my wife is an artist - ( www.ironia-art.com ) - it did not took long to think where to get the paint
covered the rail with 2 layers of acrylic black paint
now.. this is a waaaaaay much better look now
and fixed it in place. easy-peasy

as expected.. it is always healthy to leave your hardscape for a while to settle with no water..
so did few changes in the left side corner. also emptied the front fold for different gravel.
And added few pieces of rock there and there..
As i never had a chance before.. I decided that this will be a nicely planted Betta tank. I always liked the
fish but none of the tanks were suitable for it. Regardless of its size I will try to make for Betta as much
hiding spaces as possible. I'm thinking to get a pair of it (male+female). I know they don't like strong
currents so I will get a lilly pipe for this and will load my eheim 2213 full of media tu reduce the flow as much as possible. However - I would like to see a very few tiny schooling fishes. Any suggestions (suitable for Betta)

As an artist your wife should appreciate the living art you are creating. I like the dinning room.
I like both hardscapes.
Pogostemon erectus can grow fast and tall if it gets lots of light. With reduced light it only needs trimming every 4-6 months.
Most plants will work on the back right growing out of the water. Once they are not to close to the light were they will dry out.
There is a new Cryptocoryne "hobbit" that is very small that could work well in this scape. All going well I could have some this week.
A good option to go with the Betta is the red ruby tetra. Small, colorful and just to big to be eaten.
I like the DIY project. I think everyone likes a bit of DIY.

Ok. Few more pics of flooding it and once water cleared
so just few more plants and my Betta will swim in by the end of September
not afe enough now as I would like to keep co2 for a while a bit over the levels

Ok! Time for another update!
plants doing well.
2 weeks til Betta will be in. Decided to move my 2 yellow rasboras from another nano!
I say I love them. Will add another 3 or 4. I hope Betta won't mind a little company.
Have read on different forums they can get easy away with these, but that's more depends
on particular Betta temperament. Will see how it will act, if needed I always can move yellow
rasboras to to one of my other tanks. One Amano shrimp went along with few snails.
So far solution to reduce current with 2 walves closed on 1/4th on intake forks fine.

Just a quick update. As I closed my Fuval nano project (takes too much time for me to maintain 3 nanos)
moved to this one a bit of cuba carpet, monteCarlo and riccia fluitans (love this plant), I will leave it for few weeks
with no trimming, love it goes bushy

Added a good bit of snails - he is now happy lil fella on his own

Lauris the tank is looking great and the betta is awesome, they are amazing fishes and never stop surprising me. Mine was in a community with kubotais, lampeyes, galaxies and shrimps and the shrimps kept breeding!
P.S I can't see the last photos you've uploaded.

Your wife wont be happy with the nano gone. Her with the eye of an artist will quickly notice the balance has gone in the dinning room.
Don't be surprised if she demands another tank to be set up.
I like it when tanks are let overgrow a bit. But be careful with the Riccia, it can easily overtake or detach if not kept in check.
Again you have achieved good depth in the tank. You must be a photographer at heart or else your wife has subconsciously been a big influence in your layouts.
P.S. reading your post I just want to check if you still want the Kabuti rasbora, or is the Betta attacking them?

hah. she noticed it only on 2nd day. lol. so I think she is happy I have a hobby but she isn't excited about it.
also she has very strong criticism and appears to be this Betta tank is first one she really like. lol
I'm trying to keep an eye and not let it take over all over the place.
at the moment it goes soo bushy i don't want to cut it. but once it will overgrow I will
do some good cut back and hive the cut-offs away

yep. Betta does not get away with them. but I still would love them. I'll add them to my 60L scapeP.S. reading your post I just want to check if you still want the Kabuti rasbora, or is the Betta attacking them?
I am a hobbyist photographer. I guess for 7 years now. Mainly Film photography - Irish landscapes (film 35mm)Again you have achieved good depth in the tank. You must be a photographer at heart or else your wife has subconsciously been a big influence in your layouts.
