Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Thank you guys !
Lydia: I don't know about it being one of the best but i am pretty happy about it and the fish seems to be happy too !
I ll try Esoxluciouss idea of using slate to keep the 2 substrate separate as the corry cat moves everything around !

Hi lads so here is a quick update on my discus tank, fishes have grown a lot (i guess :woohoo: ) so i thought i'd share a few pictures with you all !

This is George !!! :silly:

And meet Maurice !!!

I am a little worried about this little fella as he does not grow as fast as the others, maybe he is the submissive one ???

Also my Hc kept dying so i change it to Monte Carlo micranthemum. Also added some flame moss and weeping moss. As you can see on top of the wood, i added some Urticuaria graminifolia. I know it it a difficult plant but i hope it will attach and grow along the wood. Did you guys ever try that ? do you think it will work ?

Also please let me know what you think about the overall shape, health of the discus, i'd like to know if i am doing a good job so far raising these beauties.(fishes are about 6-7cm)

....(after 4 weeks, still waiting on seahorse to get me the 4 Asian i ordered... )....

And no Lydia, the corrys are still very shy...

Thank you all ! Inza.

Is really beautiful, the colors of the plants and fishes are stunning! Your plants have grown a lot since I was there.
I don't think there should be a problem with the utricularia attached to the wood.

How is the montecarlo I've think in using it for my next project since Darren told me it didn't need CO2.

Lydia, the monte carlo seems to have taken roots, some leaves started melting but new ones are growing so it must do pretty well :)

Also no one to give me some feedback on the overall quality of the discus ?

Thanks, Inza.

Your discus look great Inza......I think you tank has such a burst of colours ...superb...

Keeping a planted tank like that and discus isn't easy.....what temp have you the tank at? What are the red plant variety so..would love some clippings of them when trimming it next....

Really nice tank, there. All of the fish look great. I wouldn't worry too much about the smaller one- looks healthy to me. So long as he is getting enough food and not being bullied too much by the bigger fish I wouldn't worry at all. Some fish will just grow at slower rates, doesn't necessarily mean anything wrong with him.
I would only start to worry if he acts very differently to others- ie rarely swimming with the rest, being overly harrassed (a little is inevitable) by most of the bigger fish etc.
Anywho, keep the photos coming so we can keep up with the progress.

Thank you guys !

@Gonefishy : Water is kept at 29'c. The red plants are alternenthera reineckii mini on the front, they wont grow much higher than what they are now and in the foreground it is alternethera reinechii bronze. These plants require a fair amount of light and iron in order to keep theme red.

At the moment i will keep the trimming for an other forum member but you'll be next :)

@Xaribdis : Thank you for your feedback !
Actually this little guy is not really being picked on, he his in fact the one harassing the others, even the angels i have ! He also love to swim below the spray bar, where the water flow is the strongest.

i guess i am just worried i could and up stunned. I am not raising discus in order to have competition grade fishes but i still want to make sure they grow properly ;)

Thank you, Inza

Keep up with the regular water changes and sensible feeding and you might be surprised by the smallest fish- if he's good and active and feisty, as you said, he/she could end up being the star of the tank. Just make sure it's getting its fair share of food.

hi everyone a quick update on my tank as i got a couple more discus !

This is a red melon or marlboro i got from Miamiheat.
File Attachment:

And those are some snakeskin i got 3 days ago, still a little shy but starting to eat a little ^^

File Attachment:

File Attachment:

As you can see my red turquoise are growing nicely !
File Attachment:

BUT it seems i have an algae problem  I never encounter this algae before so if you guys have any idea on how and why, i'd really appreciate it.

So this is what my rocks are cover with...
File Attachment:

File Attachment:

And removed quite a lot of this one on the sand:
File Attachment:

ph 6.2
nitrite 0
amonia 0
nitrate 10 (add it everyday for plant growth)
phosphate 0.1 (added every week)
iron 0.1

if you manage to get rid of those algae please let me know !

Thx, Inza.

Well done inza on a truly amazing looking tank, if I may offer little advise, dont be tempted to keep adding fish, it will only lead to trouble with aggression and bio mass.

quick update, it appears that love is in the air !!!

My angels paired up and they started to spawned !!!

File Attachment:

As of now my discus spawn has been eaten by the parents i guess, i will wait for an other spawn to be sure it is a proven pair and i might be willing to sell it as i have 4 other discus coming in soon !!! ( finally :) )

if they keep breeding like that, i might have to get an other tank... :)

here is a picture taken with natural sunlight:

File Attachment:

Apparently, as gunnered1972 said, this algae is due to a lack of nitrates in the water, even if i add it by myself every day for the plants growth.
will monitor it for a while hoping it goes away !

Thank you, Inza.

Be very careful if it's blue Green algae, would hate to see this tank down because of it :(

I had it a few weeks ago, (see my thread)

Thx darkslice, i did the same as you, injected the product directly in the substrate and on to the surface.

But it seems i was all wrong, today surprise ! My discus pair did not eat the fry as you can see :cheer:
File Attachment:

And this is the angel spawn
File Attachment:

so i am supposed to do a WC tomorrow but i do not know if it would be wise with the fry in the tank ...
