Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

The tank is only 19ltr and a first 'planted' nano tank for me, Im looking just to put shrimp in it in the future,
and as usual any advice and criticism Welcome!! :)

SM

Tank just filled about 20 minutes ago and cloudy as hell! But hopefully will look better in the future..

You are a patient Guy, keep taking your Time, Ammonia will be high for a while as the substrate settles, google Plants requiring low Light levels, Crypts, Moss, Anubias, Java Fern etc, CO2 will go a long way to get the plants to grow but stem plants and coloured ones like Alternanthera and Ludwigia etc will not thrive. Best of luck.... Some nice examples of this Tank planted on Youtube.

Seems a lovely and small tank and must look great with plants and shrimps. Keep posting photos.
Are this tanks open lid?
I went also shopping today and wasn't luck at all, after walking 3km to the shop they had nothing I needed (T8 bulbs, Manado and Epoxy) so I came back home having lost my afternoon and with empty hands

Ye it looks a little better today, and it has a plastic lid on top just an opening for the light, typical now some days the shops don't have what you need!!
Im kind of freaking out thinking its to small of a tank to plant and setup but came across some nice examples online to keep me going,
Anybody else ever setup a small tank like this before/? Pros + Cons?

So Just an update, the little guy is still cycling, moss was put on my wood and a few plants just gone in a couple days ago, But roots already starting to hold tight! :)
Water was tested again today and ammonia still a little high and PH very low-6.2- But 60% water changes every 3 days will continue and hope for the best,
Update will follow-

Great to see your progress, tighten the plastic screw on the light where it connects with the Tank, it will straighten it up.

Hey Esox,
I cycled it for about 6 weeks, Took a lot of patience and time, and water changes due to the gravel/substrate.. about 80% every3 days,
ye the cichlids are super, there my first ones and there wild, I have a male and female, I found them today 'digging' up some gravel around the moss tree and there making a little tunnel underneath it??! mad looking!

Which dwarf are they. I usually had 2 females for every male. So the females could have a break.
I am two weeks into a cycle all params seem ok , just nitrates a bit off 19ppm but I am feeding the plants. I will vivre it another week or so.

Why so many water changes...I know u said because of gravel. What gravel is it abd what caused u to keep doing water changes.

Thanks
