Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Few questions re: corner tank & moving filter

Hi,

#1 First off - I broke the lighting on my tank while changing the bulb last week so I'm going to replace the tank with a corner tank (any excuse).

Something like a Trigon 190 would be perfect. I've put a post in the wanted forum but I want something by next weekend. Any suggestions re: best place to get one of these much appreciated.
I missed out on one in the buy & sell that was sold the previous day for 200 quid !!

#2 My current tank is filtered via an external filter. The tank currently holds several koi which will be moved out shortly & replaced with tropicals. If I fill the new tank with declorinated water should it be just a matter of transferring the fish + filter to the new tank or will there be some cycling involved?

Thanks,
Patrick.

Hi Patrick,

If your new tank is around the same size as your current tank, then moving the filter across should work fine. Don't add any new fish to your tank for a couple of weeks at least to ensure it's properly cycled.

Regards,

Ken.

Cheers Ken - the new tank will probably be 40 litres bigger so not a whole lot & I won't be adding any new fish.

Great stuff.

Thanks,
Patrick.

Ken,
don't leave the tank empty under any circumstances. Filter bacteria need food and if you have no fish in the tank they won't be fed and will starve and thus ruining your biological filtration.

Here is what I would do. Clean your filter as normal and let it run for 2-3 days. Take the koi out. And leave your filter running. Add a pinch of flake every day and slowely bring the temperature up. Say 1-2 degrees every day. Your filter bacteria will need more food as the temperature increases since they will be more active and will be able to process more food. Of course you can connect your filter to the new tank and bring the temperature up in the new tank. Once you have raised the temperature where you want it for your tropicals you are good to stock. Just to reiterrate it, don't let the filter run for any amount of time without feeding the bacteria or they will die,

Thanks Holger lots of useful info there - the first move will just be the koi from one tank to the other so that should be straightforward enough by the sound of it.

The next one will be a couple of weeks later & that will be to move the koi out & tropicals in.

Question - if I decide on African Cichlids will the salt in the water have a negative impact on the established bacteria in the filter?

Cheers,
Patrick.

??????????????

You just lost me there. I thought you wanted to move the Koi to an outside pond and use the tank where they are presently in as a tropical tank.

Secondly, what salt are you referring to? Rift Valley fish need hard water not brackish

Sorry yes - my initial post was misleading...

I damaged the lighting on my current tank which is the reason I'm buying the new tank.
Once I get the new tank I am going to transfer the koi into it.

Then in a couple of weeks the koi will be relocated to a pond & the new tank will house tropicals.

The salt I am talking about is something like this stuff: www.pets-warehouse.com/Vpasp/shopexd.asp?id=88457

Cheers,
Patrick.

Why not transfer the Koi into the pond straight from your old tank rather than putting them into the new tank? This would reduce stress for the Koi since they would only have to be moved once.
If for whatever reason, like the pond not being ready, you want to move them to the new tank first just move the filter to the new tank. Also transfer as much water as possible from the old tank to the new.
I'd just leave them in the old tank. Koi don't require the lights to be on in the tank and Koi being Koi I would assume you have no plants in the tank :D

The salts you have there are buffers. Yes, technically they are salts but I prefer to call them buffers. They will harden your water but not make it saline as in marine tanks. Before you spend money on them test your water. If it is naturally hard you won't need them. And, to answer your question, they will have no detrimental effect on your filter

Yep - the pond is not ready yet which is why I was going to move the koi twice. Plus the fact that the light is broken was my justification to the missus for buying the new tank..

Might just wait til I get the new tank then tell her I read that the Koi don't need light

On the subject of the tank - I found one in Germany for about 100 EUR cheaper than here. 210 for shipping to Dublin though

Cheers for all of the info,
Patrick.
