Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,I bought a couple of sae's around 4 months ago,and they have nearly tripled in size, there great at keeping the algae at bay! There's always a but! But there a bit pain, I've had a pair of rams pair up and they spawned for me and before I could get the camera out the wagons that they are ate the spawn  so I think it's time for them to be rehomed, would anyone want to swap these for some ottos because. Because I reckon the rams would have a better chance at fending them off in the case of another spawn? Any feedback would be great!

Ha ha yup, you'll have fun, I started to try to catch one in a Planted Tank, 150 Litre, little by little I started to get angrier and little by little plants started to be removed to see where the little Fecker was, in no time my Tank was devoid of Plants, the water resembled Coffee and the SAE was nowhere to be seen, I had groups of Fish hiding out in corners and still no SAE, I had to wait until the water settled before I could catch him.

What was the reason for taking yours out? If you don't mind me asking?.and what would you recommend as far as algae control is concerned? Damien in blanch said he was getting some bristles nose in next week I was thinking maybe 3 or 4 or would ottos be better?

Kinsealy always have them in stock but that might be a bit of a stretch for yeh......if it is then i would ring around the shops that are close to yeh and i'm sure one at least would have them.
Yeh wont regret getting these mate....i didn't believe the dude that told me how good they are so i purposely let a 100L tank go for about 6 weeks,i mean all the glass, plants, wood etc. was covered in algae....in 2 days two of them not only cleaned the whole tank,it looked like new.....Savage!!!!

While were on SAE i have four in my community tank, a pair of Kribs have spawned they lost all over night, i blamed my bristlenose, i didnt think the SAE would do that. Now i owe the plec an apology.

Petco on Long-mile road has a special on Otto's at the moment - 5 for €12 - I picked up 5 earlier and intend going back for another 5 next week if these work out (and the offer is still running).

Sorry - it was my first time there, so don't know what their policy is :( .

They were exceptionally nice, and very good value too (I picked up some beautiful corydoras pygmaeus for €2 a head)

Don't I know - for some reason the price of Ottos seems to vary enormously between shops

Petco's price for 1 is €2.95 (still a very good price), I've seen them retail for €5-7 in a lot of shops and go all the way up to €11.95 for a fancy panced variety.
