Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have recently added some live plants to my 60x30x30cm tank and I am really delighted with how the fish (mainly tetras) are reacting and how the tank looks now.

I have another tank of the same size that currently homes two goldfish and a koi...I once thought that one day I'd have a pond but that might be a bit further off than I planned! if the fish remain or not the tank needs an overhaul it's gotten dark and depressing looking and I want something a bit more alive looking.

Anyway If the koi and goldfish were rehomed I'd hope to make the tank into a tropical planted tank (low tech and as fool proof as possible).

I was thinking of the following inhabitants:

1 butterfly fish
2 zebra loach
6 Harlequin Rasbora

or

2 Pearl Gourami
2dwarf chain loach or corys
6 sparkling gourami ( will these have a peaceful life with the pearl gouramis?)

Any advice, or small fish that people with planted tanks can recommend would be great :) for bottom fish I have a preference for loaches and synodontis and corys.

Only fish that I will not consider are Livebearers!

Some Shrimp are a great addition to the bottom of a planted tank, also nice to see them hopping from leaf to leaf. For me one of the nicest fish in the tank will be a male Betta, the long fins and slow movment between the plants as well as the striking colour is a great sight.Plenty of small showling fish then just to keep everything moving.Dont forget the pics when your up and running

the shrimp leads to another question.... :)

is it true that the botia and loaches eat them?? is there anything they can't be kept with? Any things to know about keeping them?? I would be very interested in keeping them.

Well as is often said on this forum "if something will fit in a fishes mouth they will eat it"
Having said that I have Shrimp in a planted tank with 4 Loaches and a male Betta as well as Neon and Rummynosed Tetra and a few young Goldfish and Rasbora(I think) and while I`m not saying the Shrimp in there at the moment are the ones I bought the planted cover helps the young Shrimp to hide. Also IMO if your fish are well fed most will leave them alone.I am sure however when the Goldies get a bit bigger they will feast, but the Goldies will be moved on before then.
I also had Shrimp in my 350L tank and never saw a hint of 1 of the 10 I put in and presummed the large Goldies and Angels that shared the tank had devoured them until 11 months later when I emptied the tank and found 5 Shrimp :woohoo:
So if the fish are no threat to them I think you will see them alot or thats my experience anyway, but I`m sure others will have more knowledge than me

Keep us updated on your decision
