Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

im not sure what section this should be in but im wondering if any of ye ever kept the soft shell turtle?. ive just seen one for sale in my lfs and im interested in it but first id like to find out how easy it will be to keep. the one ive seen is most likely the florida soft shell, its a juvi maybe 6,7 inchs. ill be keeping it in a large tank with oscars, tiger shovels, arowana, various syno cat fish, large plecos, large snake head and birchers. how delicate is the shell as ive lots of sharp roots in the tank and the substrate is mixed sand and 10mm gravel. thanks for any advise.

1should be fine in your tank with those mates because I've seen 1 in a similar setup without problems. They like to bury themselves in the substrate with only their head sticking out so something to keep in mind if you have plants or don't like your tank being rearrange. The 1 I remember seemed abit timid so if the are I'd just say make sure it's getting food.

Below tank is for sale

They are really nice addition BUT they have a really nasty bite, I had one years ago and would feed him frozen lance fish, he would bite it in half frozen with ease, really cool though, its recommended they get some sort of UVB to help absorb calcium and dont really bask all that much, from my experience anyway. Is it an albino or normal? B)

Really interesting Animal but will slice through any fish in a jiffy I had a beautiful Red Gourami which lived in the top part of a very overgrown tank, they never crossed each others paths, then one morning I awoke to find half a Gourami, with a perfect u shaped bite where his Head used to be, these don't sleep at night and will bite any sleeping Fish he happens upon.

thanks lads for replying, finn i dont know if its albino or normal, it has a pale green/gray coloring with brown patches on its shell, im guessing its a normal young florida soft shell. im going back to the shop later today to see if its male or female as the females grow much bigger. the smallest fish i have is a pictus cat fish all the others are over a foot long upto 2 foot tiger shovel nose, so i doubt if this turtle will bother any of my fish. i did not ask the price of it so that will be a huge issue if i get it or not. if i do get the turtle ill post some pics of it.

i got the turtle yesterday and once i put it in my tank the fish freaked out :silly: never seen anything like it before but soon settled down. the turtle just explored his(im guessing its a male)new home. he needs a platform just under the water level so he can sit there and breath air, so thats my job today, not realy sure how im going to manage this and not make it look crapy in my tank. heres a few pics of him.

Hes really cool, im not jealous at all ;) I had a turtle doc for mine, just got it in a normal pet shop, anywhere that stocks reptiles should have them. Keep us updated on how he gets on with your fish anyway, I use to hand feed mine the lance fish, pick yourself up some of those and let the fun times begin

thanks finn, feeding this guy wont be a problem as he is not shy to compete with my big fish for food, last night he had prawns, muscles and clams for dinner, better than i had. ill have a good look around the shops that do reptile supplies and see about getting a turtle dock. because of the weirs in my tank i cant drop the water level to allow a floating dock for him to bask on so maybe i can get one to sit just under the water level and let him sit there to rest and still breath air, in time train him to come there for feeding.
