Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I'll start the ball rolling - you have to try a lot harder to find something better than ordinary mosquito larva.

Of course, this is a bit of a 'horses for courses' question really.
Daphnia is very good but can act as a laxative, white worms, equally good, but do tend to 'bind' up the fish if too much is fed.
Earthworms are excellent for larger fish, and also very good if chopped into small enough portions for less large ones (the worms should be 'purged' first - I use a bucket of clean moss and allow the worms to crawl through the moss, inverting the container a few times, they always crawl through to the bottow and are eventually cleansed of the stuff they have inside them.
If you can get them, Glassworms are very good (a different aquatic fly larva) - bloodworms equally so, but need to be collected from unpolluted water (which can be a problem since that is their natural habitat).
The banana worms - and the like are dreadfully tiny but are very good for feeding to fry.
Freshwater shrimps (Gammarus) - great for larger fish.
Any further suggestions for Chris?

Cheers John

As all my tanks are community tanks maybe the worms are my best bet, just want to give the fish a change from flaked and frozen grub.
Will be glad to see any other replies

Thanks again

BTW is insomnia part of fish-keeping? seems to be people on here no matter what hour of the day or night

I sleep mostly in the evening - I find the TV to be a great soporific.

But around about this time I start to get tired again (if I'm lucky).

I use micro worms and baby brine shrimp for killifish fry. When the fry get a bit bigger i feed them grindal worms and when fully grown they get a mix of food including white worms and chopped beef hart.

The problem with some live food is the can be hard to culture but the grindal, micro and white worms are easy to keep and will give you lots of the high quality food.

Word of warning tho, keep an eye on your live food cultures when they go sour your hole house will stink!

I have two white worm cultures going. One advantage they have is that they're very easy to keep going once their numbers increase enough

For some fish, the type of live food is more vital than simply giving the fish live food.

Top of the list are Cyclops (or other copepods). These (or similar food having the right nutritional attributes) are vital for successfuly raising some species of fish.
Care needs to be taken with Cyclops in that larger specimens can be predators of small fry.

Tubifex worms are excellent food having very high nutritional value with limited negative nutritional attributes.
However, be aware that tubifex could have been collected from regions containing pathogens or pollutants.
Aerate the culture.

Ditto blackworms (but not always easy to obtain)

Daphnia are great....not as good as copepods....but great.

Various species of shrimp (eg Gammarus and Dwarf White) are great for larger fish that may not take dead/frozen or prepared food. Feed the shrimp with spirulina for added benefit.

Rotifers and other small microscopic food for certain fry are important.

All of the above are useful in that they are quite easy to get a starter culture, and then attempt to breed the food.

Food such as wax worms or whiteworms are high in fat and should only be fed now and then to avoid fatty degeneration of internal organs.

Bloodworm and glassworms are good, but you need to go out and hunt down fresh stock.

Brineshrimp are good food for many fry, but not for all fry as a key food. Not great nutritional value, but they still provide important parts of digestible value.
