Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Has anybody any hints or tips for getting rid of snails in an aquarium.

As far as I know they are pest snails, I think they must have came in on a plant, I wasn't to concerned at the beginning but im beginning to see more of them now and want to act before they take over completely

Thanks

Assassin snails are probably your best bet if you're not going down the chemical route. They're pretty good at hunting other snails down and breed too slowly to become a pest themselves. What kind of snails are plaguing you?

As far as i know they are just common pond snails, Not quiet at plague proportions yet but getting there, a couple of months ago all I could ever see was one or two, now I see seven or eight everytime I look at the tank.
I was tempted by the chemical route but came across a lot of warnings online, that they can harm fish
do I need anything specific for assassins or are they happy enough to go about their business in any tank setup?
My tank is 350 litres how many do you reckon I would need?

I'd get 5-6 and see how they do. Chemicals can sometimes do the job but as far as I know, they can sometimes kill off bacteria in the filter if used in too high a dose, or not kill all the snails if the dose is too low. And if it's Malaysian trumpet snails you have then chemicals will be useless.

Yeah +1 on the Assassin snails also remove as many as you can by hand. I put 10 Assassin snails in a 250l planted tank and within 8 weeks the pest snails were no longer a problem. I still see the odd one but I don't mind one or two.

you could also put some food in a snail trap and handpick as many out as possible. That will speed up the process and reduce the re population rate. The assassin snails will assist you in removing them.Oh and the assassins breed at far lesser levels so you won't be over ran again with them thankfully. You should be able to pick them up easily enough.

I used dome clown loaches before, crushed a few snails for them and once they got the taste for them they cleaned the tank out

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll have a scout around I'll surely find some somewhere. Seahorse is a bit to far away its a good 2 1/2 hour drive. I think my wife would have me committed if I went that far for snails

Someone nearby will surely have a few in their tanks that they would be happy to share...perhaps open a separate thread seeking some.

+1 on this...clown loaches will demolish them....I'll never put a plant in my tank again without retreating it with snail killer chemical - a few drops into a bucket of water, leave the plant for an hour and no more snail eggs, snails or anything resembling a snail :)
