Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

How often I have to change the filter's sponges?

Hi everybody!

I have got a juwel aquarium rekord 60l.The tank comes with the standart filter media JUWEL Filter System Compact Super pump and in the filter media there are 4 different sponges:
-Filter Sponge Fine(blue color)
-Nitrate Removal Sponge(green color)
-Active carbon Sponge(black color)
-Pre-Filter Wool Pad(white color)
I have red all the aquarium instructions but i think is better to follow somebody's advices than the instructions:)
So how often do u think I have to change the sponges?

Now I'm nearly 6 weeks that I'm running the aquarium and I have never changed any sponge just the white one I have washed it a couple of times.

In my tank I have got a guppy, 2 male swordtails, 4 mollies, 1 angel fish and 1 bala shark(silver shark).

Thanks :-)

Neki

No need for the carbon filter. After 6 weeks it will be exhasuted anyway. get rid of it and replace with another fine blue pad.
the filter pads contain bacteria that will break down ammonia to nitrite and finally nitrate. If you change the filter pads you will also get rid of these beneificial bacteria. You can wash them out in tankwater (never tapwater since it contains chlorine wich will kill the bacteria)

You should get rid of the green nitrate pad too , it also becomes exhausted and needs replacing or removal after 5-6 weeks , i wouldn't change it till you substitute the carbon sponge there is no need for the carbon sponge only for removal of medications or setting up a new tank which this sponge has a 5-6 week life after that is exhauted and will leech back into the tank contaminents it contains.

I change the white regularly as and when needed, never touch the rest, apart from a wash out IN TANK WATER,again,as and when needed.Never any problems.A mate just washes the white one and sticks it back in(a discus tank at that).I would rather spend a few euro than lose hundreds of euro in fish.
Juwel tell you to change regularly, thats because they want to sell you more. Also mags like PFK tell you to change regularly too, thats because Juwel advertise with them. You will see a review in latest issue of PFK of holiday feeders, again, not needed, but they advertise in the mag.A lot of beginners could save a lot of money if they realise this.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

Never change mine either, usually when i give someone a piece to help seed a new filter thats the only time i replace some.

The rule of thumb is, when you squeeze the sponge and it doesn't bounce back to its original shape, then bin it.

Smoke me a Kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.

I occasionally change my fine media. (poly wool).
When I say occasionally I mean like when it falls apart, so every 4-5 months or so. Going to replace my carbon ones in my external this week with poly pads. That should be it on changing media for about 5 months then.
