Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Has anyone bought any live fish from Aquabid? and if so how successful was it?

No but I have bought Killifish eggs and they were OK...I think you might come across difficulties with live fish due to water restrictions on planes.

water restrictions are on hand luggage only and the good news is that the airlines are even rethinking this rule now.

No experience with Aquabid though. I would ask the seller how long the fish will be in transit and which courrier company will be used. Then cross check with the courier company

Sounds lovely, how we long for decent strains of Bettas in this part of the globe.

From experience on non fish items & I'm talking ebay, not aquabid here, I've had items arrive from Hong Kong etc within a week, but items from the US have been in the post no shorter than a week & on a couple of occasions around 6 weeks.

if it was coming from Britain maybe you know some one in the north that would allow you to use their address

When I was in the UK last Sept I saw some of the best White Clouds I'd ever seen. I decided to make the enquiries needed to take them on the plane with me. I phoned the airport & they put me in contact with DEFRA. The people over there said they had no problems with it as long as they couldn't survive in native waters. They then gave me the information for the Dept of Marine over here & I called them. They said the same & that I didn't need any special papers. There could've been some confusion though due to the temperature requirements of White Clouds but WE all know that they wouldn't survive outside of the home here in the winter so would pose no threat to native species. That was within the European Union though. I gather it's different from outside the union. Remember, Glen was saying something about it at the meeting the other night regarding delays in getting stock released from the airport. He said that it was faster to get it shipped to Germany I think & then to Dublin as they would have been cleared in Germany.

As the law stands you are not allowed to import species that might survivr over here and even that bit of legislation is a bit wonky since you can bring in bitterlings without restriction and they could potentially thrive here. Just give them a fesh water mussle and you are at the races...

I have brought fish from Germany and the UK. Customs generally didn't want to know and they couldn't tella discus from a koi for starters...

I have seen fish cleared by the Dept. of Agriculture that should have never been allowed into the country.

One of my local LFSs is bringing fish over from Singapore. I was planning to stop in tomorrow anyway and will have a chat with the owner.

I believe within the EU theres no problem, except getting them on a planefrom outside the EU you need a licence from DEFRA, plus a carrier to go through.Freight Forwarding Agency, i use Benair from Singapore to Manchester.

Defra is responsible for the UK only. In Ireland it is the Dept. of Agriculture
