Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Dirt easy. All you need is a big water jug, aquarium water and some straw. dried banana skins work fine too and my old man is using condensed milk.

Read some were that you just get a jar of tank water (told that is best cause no chlorine) add a piece of lettuce close the jar as the smell is suppose to be very potent leave for a week in a warm place (usually a window).Done.

Basically Tetra-tetra is right, the infusoria is in water everywhere but in such low quantities as to be of no problem.
If you want to make a culture all you do is to start with some water, which will contain the 'nucleus' of it already and leave it to stand.
You can add almost anything non-meat wise and as it starts to decompose it will porovide food for the ever-expanding colony of infusria - there are many different types and I don't think any are harmful...well, not to the baby fish anyhow.

Many years ago all fish breeders would have a couple of Apple Snails in a large battery jar, a small tank would be better nowadays as battery jars are most definitely a thing of the past!
these snalis would be kept provided with vegetable matter, either in the form of offcuts of kitchen veg or aquarium plants.
Now, the Apple Snail give of a fair lot of faeces and these used to provide the 'nutrition' for the infusoria.

So you use the Aple Snail to 'short cut' the decomposing process of the vegetable matter. And...have less smell - or I should more rightly say - stink!!!

Actually, you would even find infusoria in water which has held cut flowers for a few days - I seem to remember that Chrysanthmums were always reckoned to give the best...but think now that was just someone's favourite which gradually became 'folklore'.

@ John,

never heard about the apple snail method but it is interesting.

What I generally do ist to get a 5 litre jar, drop a handfull of straw into it, fill it 3/4 with tank water. The water will go very cloudy. Once the water clears you have a viable infusoria culture. As John mentioned, this is best done in a warm place since this will speed up the development of infusoria. It is alo quite smelly. best to use the shed in the summer and the attic in the winter. You will have to feed your infusoria to keep them going. I use a couple of mls of condensed milk.

again something i know nothing about but i was looking up wikipedia and i noticed the word smell and ferment. so i more ask that suggest could you treat it like making wine? when i use to make a lot of wine (sorry long winded) to try a wine you were not sure about we would make a couple of liters first instead of demijohn a coke bottle and balloon and rubber band. but mix in bottle then but the balloon on as stopper use rubber band to secure the balloon stop bottle breaking with the pressure or in this case holds the smell i would still open it every day or so to allow oxygen in. would this work do you think :?: :?: :?:
