Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Not sure whether this topic has been touched before but I have the impression that aquaristics is a totally male dominated hobby. Actually, I don't know and never knew a single woman keeping fish. strange... is there anything in general that turns women off of fish???

There are plenty of female aquarists out there, apparently you havent looked very hard!
TBH I dont notice women these days unless they are in mini skirs so maybe the piont is not enough women in fishkeeping are wearing mini skirts, though Anto and Holger are slowly changing that!!

I like Nuns in wet T-shirts, but that's another story.

There are several lady aquarists on this forum...the SAS has three!

Georgina & Kate too.

PFK has a very active thread on this subject recently with some interesting input from women that work in shops & how people seem to bypass them...

Penguin,
Why on earth wouldn't you think you'd be taken seriously?

Two tanks is more than some of the people on here have and they're all, like yourself as welcome as the flowers in May (as the song goes).

This isn't an elitist forum like some out there, we all muck in, even have a bit of fun along the way too.

So let's hear no more of that sort of talk...OK?

Or....we'll send Fr Jack around, and you wouldn't like that....

The candirú parasitizes other fish. It swims into the gill cavities of other fish, erects a spine to hold itself in place, and feeds on the blood in the gills, earning it a nickname as the "vampire fish of Brazil." In 2004, research determined that candirú do not suck blood, but rather latch on to an artery and have blood pumped into them.[2]

It is feared by the natives because it is attracted to urine,[3] and if the bather is nude it will swim into an orifice (the vag..a and even the pe..s—and deep into the urethra) and because of spines protruding from the fish, it is almost impossible to remove except through surgery.[4] The fish locates its host by following a water flow to its source and thus urinating while bathing increases the chance of a candirú homing in on a human urethra. Natives have also been known to bathe facing the current, as doing so would decrease the chances of the organism lodging itself in the rectum.[citation needed] Other orifices such as the p..is or vag...a are covered up with the use of hands.
