Need to move the tank
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,
We are getting some work done in the room where the fish tank is and its going to be in the way so we need to move it (and obviously move it back again when done!). We can keep it in the same room it just needs to shift to a different corner.
Just wanted to get some advise on best way to do this. Its a Juwel Vision 180 on a Juwel stand with standard Juwel equipment (no externals other than air pump which obviously wont be a problem).
What I'm thinking is take out maybe 50% of the water and then just lift ?
If I could somehow get it on wheels it would be ideal, I've seen some things for moving furniture before - sort of like castors - has anyone used these ?
Thanks,
Declan.

If you're using paints etc in the room then the tank ought to come out of the room until the fumes have gone.
Can't comment on the using of wheels as I've never done it. Whenever I move a tank, I remove as much of the water as possible into large storage boxes, I usually stick the heater & filter in one of them with the fish too but you can't do that with the Jewel filter. I then just pull on the cabinate accross my laminate flooring & it slides no problem. Will be a bit harder on lino though.

Hi Declan,
half a tankful of a Jewel 180 will still weigh in at more than 100kg so be careful when shifting it. A slipped disc is not pleasant...You will only be able to do this safely on your own on a wooden floor. An carpet or lino you will have great difficulties moving the tank on your own. Better to get a two or three people together. You should be able to lift the whole set up then. Give me a shout if you need a hand

Thanks, its a wooden floor alright but semi-solid so liable to scratch if things are dragged over it.
My brother-in-law is around on Sun so may put him to work

If that fails I may be calling for additional help!
There is going to be no painting done but could be some dust - new fireplace going in - but I was thinking that having the tank covered while the work is going on should be fine.
Declan.

Hi Declan,
Just a suggestion, maybe putting an old sock under 4 of the feet woudl allow you to slide it rather than drag it.
Though it would require less muscle work, I still would do it with two people as different thicknesses of cloth could destabilise the whole ensemble...

I dragged a 3/4 empty RIO 300 across a semi solid floor without any damage but Valerie's idea with the socks sounds good.
If you need help, you have my number

Hi Declan
Yes covering the tank will be fine. It will also help keep it insulated if the power is off. Note that if you are turning it off then the filter bacteria begins to die off after about an hour. I've had tanks without power for about 12 hours without problems in the past though. If you're gonna be running your airpump, run it from the inside of a sock. This will filter out dust particles being injected through the airstone.
Regards
Richard
