Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Never seen one of those but I amazed at all the new products
on the market today.
Personally I would get some Loaches to eat them.

Hi Anthony,
Can you please remind me which type of loaches would suit a community tank and eat snails ? :cheer:
Thanks - Valerie

Clowns are very good.
I think Pakistani loaches eat them too but I have see the Clowns
in action in my mate planted tank. They do a great job.

@Valerie,
what kind of snail are they. Round one or ones that have the shape of a traffic cone?
The ones that are shaped like a traffic cone are actually quite useful. They turn over the substrate and help plant growth.
Do the round ones actually do any damage. In small numbers they are OK. You can use them as live food. Just crush them and your fish will eat them.
Loaches are rumoured to eat snail but I have my doubts. Puffers are excellent snail eater. Go for a South American species, they tend to be less aggressive and don't require brackish water.

If you don't want to add any more fish to your tank you could go for one of these traps. Years ago we just used a plasic cup and put some minced meat in a bit of a nylon tights and left it in the tank. Once a number of snails were in the cup you just took it out of the tank and got rid of the snails and put it back into the tank. It's not like they are going to get away from the cup with lightning speed :cheer: and you don't really have to invest in yet another gadget.

The snails I have in my tank are the flat type. I don't think I have too many but definitely more than there used to be. I remove approx. 3 a day at the moment and I'd like to do something before there are too many of them ! I have 2 pakistani loaches in the tank already and they don't seem to be that interested (that said, I am not constantly looking at the tank ;)!).
I might try the mince meat trick soon ! Thanks.
