Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

From experience just take out the ones you see or buy a fish that loves to eat them, i have seen stuff to get rid of them in shops but i wouldnt dare try it unless recomended to do so. and the sooner you take them out the less chance they have to breed.

Cillians right there. If you dont have snail eating fish,eg clown loaches, puffers, etc, then manual removal is good, but probably wont get them all.Try a bit of cucumber in the tank before lights out, then remove it whilst still dark, should be a good few snails on it.May take a few weeks to clear the tank.
There are a few chemicals, but you should get out as many as possible first, the more dead snails, the more chance of pollution.
Good luck!

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

Phil i dont know what size tank you have but the clown loach need a good sized tank.
If you have a small (2-3') tank an alternative would be Dwarf/Chain Loaches (botia sidthimunki).
I beleave these will get rid of your snails. If they show no interest stop feeding your fish and when they get hungry they will eat the snails.

Darren.

there in the juwel vision 260 so they should have a bit of room. The problem is i had clowns before and i caught them eatting my cardinals and i don,t want it to happen again.. Dwarf/Chain Loaches do sound like a bit of a safer bet...

yo yo are an excellent choice for snails but it all comes down to food if you over feed! the fish will eat it first plus you are feeding the snails. have both yo yos and clowns but i also use lettuce which i put in side an onion net. (snails have a home in my under gravel)

As for the chemical choice well the majority are copper based which will also kill some wanted species best to avoid were possible.

I noticed small snails after a few weeks of introducing plants to an 'empty' aquarium. They are quite small and are simialar shape to pond snails, but have transparent/mottled shells. Also, I noticed a few small ramshorn snails a few weeks later.
There seemed to be loads of them and they were reproducing at the water surface with this ugly slime :X
I thought I was going to be overrun.
I left the plants to get established for a month or so and after I began to add fish, the snail population seemed to be noticably down.:woohoo:
-By the way I didn't add any loaches-
I see the odd snail now, but from what I have read, they prefer algae to plants(and I have read the go for dying leaves first) and the small snails you get from plants were deliberately added to the nurseries to help combat algae.
Well that's my little story. Good luck.

Hi,

I have the problem with snails in my malawi setup. If anyone wants them they are welcome to them :) I could make a good little bag of them.

Cheers
Brendan
