Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi everybody.

On a recent trip to Borneo, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to catch some wild fish in the Kinabatangan river (Sabah). The first two were caught using a cast net in an ox-bow lake off the main river, the cat-fish was caught on a rod and line using the small fish (having dried it in the sun).
Looked in a few books but cannot find positive identification. I suspect the larger one may be a tin-foil barb?
Any help in ID'ing the fish would be much appreciated!

if u can keep your head when all around you ...etc etc

Nice one.Great to see you got some fishing done there,we went in a canoe up a sidestream off that river,a lot of wildlife, monkeys, snakes, birds,xl monitors,et,etc, but never got a chance to see any fish life, was a few months before I got back into fishkeeping.Have a look at this, the mystus are part way down the list,if you put the cursor on the name, the pic will appear,

As for the wee fish, looks like a rasbora.Hard to say,but try the Spot-tailed Rasbora (rasbora caudimaculata),or Sumatran Rasbora (rasbora sumatrana) whiich is apparantly extremely common.Somewhere to start anyway.

Did you get to do any diving or snorkelling?I hope so.Absolutely amazing.

Dave.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

I've always wanted to go on a trip like that, super pics.

I've no idea about the unidentified fish.

Smoke me a Kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.

I think the first one is definatly a rasorba of some kind dont know enough about them to say which though the second is also a barb of some kind based on the body shape but again i dont know enough about them to say which though, and the last look like a Mystus wolffii.

Saw a lot of wildlife on the river too - hornbills, snakes, crocodiles, orang utan, monkeys, etc.
Had the chance top go snorkelling off Manukan Island - saw hundreds of reef fish - clown fish, wrasse, parrot fish, barracuda, remora......I don't know enough about marine fish to identify them all unfortunately.

Have a look at the photo below - the locals feed the fish sliced white bread every day!!!
As soon as you step off the boat, you're greeted by the sight of thousands of fish waiting for their lunch!
