Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

im just wondering weather in a sump you can put anything ie plants fish etc as this is my curent set up
i was wondering if to convert this to a sump or just invest in another bigger external filter. then have a redundant filter plus a large expence as im not working!

If you used the smaller tank as a sump, would you have to drill the main tank or could you use a siphon the same as an external filter?

You could go external but don,t forget you need a strong retun pump to pump water back into the main tank if you going for a drilled tank or an external.

Are you going to baffle the small tank?what media are you going to use?
Limerickbandit How much does your main tank hold?
is the sump so you can hide your heater/filter or are you having trouble with nitrates etc.

Sorry about all the questions but people will give you a more informed answer if they know all the facts.

i was thinking of 3 sections in the smaller tank but... its what to use and the looks as its in the front room.1
the main tank is 200 ltrs and apart from cleaning out the external filter eery 2 weeks things are not too bad except i seem to get a green bloom eery mth or so
ph 7.2
kh6
gh7
no2 zero
no3 25
the internal filter is just being used to stop the oerload on the external and moe the water around better
i will change it for a powerhead when i get the filter/sump sorted

This is just my opnion.
Youre not haveing any trouble with the main tank do you really need more filtration. If you buy an external filter you will have another electrical wire for mains+tubing output from your tank+tubing into your tank witch you will have to hide because it,s in the front room.
Drilling the tank and baffling the sump means taking a chance on not shattering the tank plus you would have to clean it out find homes for your fish while you drill it-then buy fittings+cut glass for baffles return pump etc.I know you said you have time but it,s alot of work an expence when your happy with the tank the way it is.
I would think about making your small a tank a breeding tank pick a few nice fish and breed them it,s amazing watching fry grow and it would look better in your sitting room than a sump.
I have a spare tank and drilled that for a sump but it was a spare i wouln,t have done it ortherwise.
What ever you decide give me shout if you need a hand or any questions.
This is what i love about this hoppy everybody has their own ideas and every tank behaves different even when people are keeping the same fish.Let us know what you decide.
By the way your tank looks cool.

Good luck and keep us posted.
