Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

we can set out simple rules such as we have to have kept our favs for at least 3 months, but at any time now or in the past and we can choose any loose grouping and give a short comment or reason. i'll start off to set the ball rolling.
fav. cichlids.
1; angel fish. silver or wild type; the king.
2; altum angel; magnificent. i am ready to try them again.
3; altolamprogus calvus; the tang equivilent of angels
4; neo. occellatus; tiny, feisty and among the best characters in the fish world
5; rams or keyholes; both among my early loves in the hobby. rams though hardy when young are very short lived. keyhole very gentle.
fav. misc.
1; cory sterbai; look great in feeding shoal in darkish tank. corys in general have no downside.
2; clown loach; evergreen and everyones fav.
3; kohaku koi; supreme although very hard (and pricy) to get high or even medium grade.
4; silvertip tetras; underrated and hardy and look great in big shoal.
5; black ghost knife; almost human face and revered by indians re incarnation superstition.
ok. thats it

i spent too long writing this to let it drift to the nether regions of the forum that quick. at least daragh might find it interesting and i would be very interested to read other fishkeepers lists of favourites.

cichlids:
1. apistogrammas- wild agazzizi or pandas (never kept panda yet) havent had much success with them, but never had a tank to seperate them when they decided to kill each other! had a lovely female who got tumors... but im definately not finished with them.
2. ocellatus- for reasons youve mentoined derek, they dont take any sh1t and often attack my 4 inch calvis. also it was my first african fish. i love their little face aswell.
3. Calvis - just love the form of them, and i love a fish where the female is tiny and the male huge (i believe the females will get huge aswell if they dont breed)
4. caudopunktatus - a really pretty fish, fins always erect (displaying). will also attack my calvis when they have fry. i ve found the mum and dad both protect the new fry really well, compared with my ocellatus, the dad kinda leaves the wife to it.
5. rams... no success with these though, i had a great pair but a female apisto killed the male. every other pair i got spawned a couple of days after i bought them, then deteriorated.
misc:
1. coral goby (marine). tiny 0.5 inch (adult size is 1.5 inch). really cute colourfull hardy fish.
2.midas blenny. (marine) have a new one in qt. beautiful blue eyes, yellow body. swims like an eel.
3. clownfish. love the way they swim...they kinda waddle!
4. cardinal tetras...id love a huge tank full of them, only them!
5. flame angel. i hope to purchase one of these soon...unbeleievable colour, beautiful eyes/face. cant tell you much about their character yet though.

1. German Ram - Colourful, attractive and fantastic to watch when in breeding mood. Best kept with 1 male & 1 female.
2. Bronze Corys...Almost didnt make my list of top three but the old romantic in me decided to put them in as they were one of the first fish I kept and just have more character in them than any fish I know of. So gentle, independent and carefree. They really are the drifter of the tropical corys and are always at peace with themselves and other fish in the tank.
3. Hong Kong Pleco....This last and third fish was the hardest for me to pick, why because I have place for Sailfin mollys and also sterbai corys (like Derek). So why the Hong Kong pleco. Well firstly it actually a hillstream loach, and a cracking one at that! Takes a few months to really establish itself in the tank and hid constantly early on in my tank. However since those first 3 months went, the Hong Kong plecos came out more and more and are just hillarous and so much fun to watch as they wrap themselves around the small gravel stones and anything they can get their mouths onto! Its hard to describe them,I think anyone who has kept one will know what I mean. They just have something that is so easy to fall for!!!
So thats my list, there isnt any fish I dont like!! (Hehe even when I was young and my dad would catch mackeral I used to keep some saltwater in the garage hidden and would pop the mackeral in when my dad would catch mackeral, some would survive and Id release them the next day!! Now I'll happily eat mackeral, but I think you get the point!!).

4. Sterbai cory. Ive two and they are the best of pals, they go everywhere together! Brillant, they have their own patch at the back of the tank and roam up and down it. Nice and wholesome fish that keep to themselves but are good buddies in my tank anyhow!
5.Tempted to put the mollys in this part. Indeed its hit and miss whether I want to put them into 5 or to choose other fish that Ive kept. Ive decided late on now that Im going to change it to the Blackmoor Goldfish, The reason why Im putting this fish in is because its also one of the first fish I kept over 20 years ago. I just thought they were exotic at that time and probably ultimately put my mind towards more fancy fish that exist in tropical tanks. Im afraid alot of casualities over the years of this fish for me but then again I was only 8 when I started keeping them!!! Anyhow even though I havent kept them in over 10 or 15 years,I think its the Black moor that tempted me to look into fishkeeping more.(half of it to see why my black moors kept getting swim bladder problems!!).

2) Xenotilapia flavipinnis aka the yellow Sand Cichlid, only 2 days ago i got my first quartet of these, hoping to breed them, an unusual looking fish and more unusual in the fact they are bi-parental mouthbrooders the female hold the eggs for the first 9 days after which the male takes over...should be interesting
3) tropheus sp. just love these in all their different colours and stripes
4)lamp. compressiceps have 4 at the moment and although slow growing great characthers and superbly coloured with pike like heads
5)hard choice either lamp occelatus (have both blue and gold)I love their spirit not afraid to take on anything including my hand or caudopunktatus love their colours but dont have yet

currently 25 tanks, and breeding is the aim of everything i keep

Killifish;
Aphyosemion bitaeniayum ( Ijebu Ode, Nigeria ). Outstanding colours with a very high red dorsal fin and lyertail. Full of character once they are fed live food.
Epilatys dageti. A great panchax for the top of the tank. Always displaying to each other.
Notho. klininberg. Short lived but very colourful and very feisty. Fearless.
Gobys;
Dormitator maculatus. A large fat sleeper goby that is placid. These are real pets. You can tell their mood by there colour. Dark = bad mood or something is wrong in the tank. Blue/green and they are in top form.
Peacock goby/gudgen. A beautiful little goby with colours that could rival many a marine fish.
Stephedon sp. There are quite a few different Stephedon gobys but the few i have kept are real interesting little characters. Always darting around showing of their bright colours. Some of these are the best algae eaters you will ever come across.
Loaches;
The weather loach has to be one of the most fascinating and entertaining fish you are ever likely to keep. I could spend (& have done)hours watching them swim up and down the length of the tank and then disappear under the gravel.
Kuhli loach. Just the way they group together in knots or are hanging around dangling from plants.
Sumo loach. Feisty little fellas. Great colours and the cutest little face. They can be territorial with their own kind. 2 to a 3" tank max.
Catfish/pleco;
L46 Hypancistrus zebra. The beautiful colour of these speaks for itself.
L128 Hemiancistrus sp. Blue phantom pleco. Just a great looking pleco with its blue/green body covered in cream/green dots.
Otocinclus affinus. Deserves a place in any established aquarium.
oil catfish Tatia perugiae. A lovely little catfish with a bizarre way of feeding. It darts around blindly untill something lands in it's mouth.
Cichlids;
Discus. Great when they are young and growing up.
Festivum. Very placid but great pets.
Well i think that's enough for now. I probably could have named a couple of dozen more.

Of all the corys I keep I really like the green lasers, but again they are extremely shy so instead I will go for a CW028 a large white cory with a black stripe. Regular angels would score very highly too, many because of their character although they were not far back in the queue when beauty was been given out. Some of the fish already mentioned would have to be in their too, though I might not have thought of them without reading the other posts, like the phantom plecs, L128 and L200, also rams.
So in no particular order some of my favourites would be:
Angelfish - natural varities or P Leopoldi. I also like altums, but never kept them.
L46 - Zebra plec
L128 Blue phantom or L200 Green phantom (I might have that the wrong way around)
L182 The elusive white seamed bristlenose.
Apistogramma Beanchsi (Lovely apisto 0 unfortunately I lost my pair with recent water disater)
Betta chanoides (Very small mouthbrooding betta)
Garra Flavatara (small active garra about 4", great characters and always on the move)
Pelvichromis subocellatus "matabi" a great looker, I like all the pelvichromis too
Corydoras Green laser, followed by Gold laser or CW028 or the closely related S Barbatus.
I also like the hoplos and dwarf upside down cats.
Would have to include shrimp, although not a fish, they inhabit the same aquariums, my favourite is the giant african fan shrimp followed by CRS (Crystal Red Shrimp) then cherries, tigers, amano or and I love my weird looking long-armed shrimp, particularly their little shrimplets.
I am sure that I am forgetting something, but I can always add more

5 fav. cats
1. cory sterba; great in shoal.
2. syno petricola; nice pattern and not so aggro as multi, and smaller and more streamlined. love white trim to all fins.
3. zebra L 046; great pattern, had adult group about 12 yrs ago and sold them off cheapish by todays standards to guy from iceland. in hindsight big mistake,
4. common ancistris; primitive look to males with great bristly nose.
5. cory barbatus; adult males are magnificent, need cooler water and lots of oxygen.
like daragh i have also developed a great interest in shrimps. their behavior is gas but its a pity they stay so small. crystals and cherries are the 2 i have, courtesy of daragh.

my top fish are
1.
altum angels..... I have three, established and settled after much stress and sleepless nights and a number of losses.
2.
wild peruvian angels............ I have eleven four pairs and laying at the moment, the other fish manage to eat all the eggs and fry over a 5-10 day period with each spawn. If I thought there were people intereseted in young I would seperate a pair or two and let them do their thing.
3.
all of the Broochis cats ............. just their shape , colour and behaviour ........... absolute beauts.
4.
cory habrosus ...........I recently bought a shoal of nine about one cm in length at the moment, where they get their energy from I just don't know.
5.
wild forms of Discus
browns blues and Heckles in that order.........none at the moment maybe one day , we all have to dream.
thats my five I was trying to sneek in endless apistos and other corys but I have stuck to five.
regards

my 5 fav. malawis
1. lab. careleus; voted fav. malawi in numerous polls. deep water mbuna with dazzling colour and mild temperament. one of hardest malawi's to catch in net.
2. cyrtacara moori; biggish fish, nice blue colour and not too aggro. adult males develop human looking lips. another one hard to net.
3. pseud. salousi; look best in shoal. great orange/yellow colour on young and females, adult males blue barred.
4. prot. taiwan reef; splendid colours and pattern esp. on male. grow fairly large.
5. otopharanx black/gold. adult males are spectacularly black with golden yellow fins. females and young have nice brown blotched pattern.

After keeping fish on and off for the better part of half a century it becomes very hard to state preferences. There was a time when I was totally gone on Oscars (or Marbled Cichlids as they were known then) at school, where the other lads had either pop star or pin-up photos on the inside of their desk lids I had a photograph, by Laurence E. Perkins, of three Oscars...I took some 'ribbing' over that, I can assure you! Other Cichlids I've had a soft spot for down the years have been Brown Acaras (Portalegrensis) - the first Cichlid which I ever bred - Angel Fish, a life long favourite, there was even a time when I was totally smitten by Discus, but in a time when they were all wild-caught and not the manufactured creations we see now!
I have great memories of Egyptian Mouthbreeders, there was a time when these were the only readily available Cichlid from Africa, I found it fascinating that a female fish would exercise such protection over her brood. In later times I liked the 'Haplochromis' Nyerie (I think that was the name, it has long since been moved from the Hap genus to something beginning with 'P'). I'd best be careful here - the last two mentioned were African Cichlids! But - to be fair - neither, to the best of my knowledge, comes from the Rift Valley - the latter being from Lake Victoria.
I'm probably waffling on a bit here but will just add my passion for many, if not all, of the Apistogrammas - we used to know the Rams as part of those back then...at a time when they weren't the feeble short lived things we get now - oh for a group of Wild-caught Rams, I was promised some but sadly they never materialised.
I never really kept very many Tetras and would find it hard to list any I was really keen on - apart, perhaps, from Congo Tetras.
Barbs, I used to prefer the larger ones - especially the likes of the Clown, Spanner and Aralius (I must have like these - cant even remember how to spell their name!!!) Barbs, although at different times I also liked the Cherry, Chequer and even Tiger Barbs.
The Tiger Scat was always a very firm favourite for me, as well as the Figure of Eight Puffer and the Archer Fish too.
In early times the only Rainbow Fish were the Australian Rainbows, then the Madagascars came along - back then I liked both, still do - along with more modern imports like the Praecox, Boesmani and Parkinsoni as well as the lovely and delicate Threadfins.
Killies - for me the one which stands out in my memory was the Aphoysemion Australe Lyretail - the first Killies I ever saw, liked them so much I was bought a pair as a birthday present, these actually bred but sadly none of the eggs ever hatched. Again, later on I enjoy keeping the Sjoestedti (Blue Gularis) and some of the others too - I'm trying to get some more Australes now, perhaps - with the benefit of softer water now - I'll be luckier in breeding them this time around!
I like quite a lot of Loaches, but probably my favourite must be the Clown Loach, almost everybody's favourite, I'd guess?
Catfish - where to start? I like most of the Corys, but especially the Weitzmani, C121, Sterbai, Paleatus, Pandas and Adolfoi...not forgetting the Scleriomystax Barbatus - although I've never had too much luck with these.
Well, that's put down a very small part of my favourite fish list, sorry to have 'gone on' a bit, but as I said from the outset - after around half a century of fish keeping it's almost impossible to make a definitive list.

reading through your list reminded me of my first experience with the inimitable oscar. i was on a family holiday in cork and recovering from a bout of double barrel food poisoning courtesy of the hotel when i found a shop called cobh aquatics. it was a shed at the back of a house down a country lane and the owners were nice people and they had a good variety of species.
anyway i paid for a pair of jewel cichlids and an adorable half inch oscar and others less memorable and arranged to collect them on the way home.
anyway the jewels bred and killed most of their tankmates but tiny oscar hid behind the filter and was one of the few survivors. i found him with his big bulgy eyes peering out with a look that said why the .... did you put me in with such savages. even at that early stage he showed the legendary oscar intelligence and survived by hiding. anyway he lived for many years and was a great character and favourite of my wife and family and when he eventually died i had to concoct stories (fish hospital etc) to explain his absence to my lads until finally picking up the courage and telling them the hard facts.
even writing this has made me feel a little sad.

John, I love oscars for their character, but have never kept one, mainly because I did not want to give over a tank to big fish when I can have loads of littluns, but one of these days I will.

2. Lou Han or the Flowerhorn - in my 10 years in the hobby I managed to own 50 different kinds spread to 30 tanks.
3. Discus - currently rearing 4 assorted kinds here in Dublin
4. Clown loaches - in one point I has around 20
5. silver dollars and red hooks they look like the stance of discus but can match with monster fishes
6. Freshwater stingrays - motoros, I have a good sized pair with my arowanas and they are great
7. Bichirs - I has senegalus, dhelHeZi and ornate with my arowanas
8. Siamese tiger (tiger datnoids) they are great big fish with monster behavior
9. Goldfish/kois - just started for me and would possibly go up the scale.
10. Texas Carpente cichlid 8 manage to keep a show quality 10incher and bred several times. I still got escondidos in a pond flourishing by itself
