Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

What's my name?

I got this lad today when I went in to LFS to get some clown loach. The tank had only 2 clown loach but when the net caught the edge of the undergravel filter out popped 2 more clown loach and this lad.
The Clown Loach had been there for about 3 weeks but the 'stranger' had been there a lot longer. About 2 months or maybe more as he was only a little'un when he came into the shop. Obviously he had plenty to eat under the filter as he looks OK if not fully coloured.
File Attachment:

5 hours since bringing them home and already all 5 are more colourfull.
(Pics were taken when they went into tank)
Anyone know what type of Loach he is. Have looked through loads of pics but can't find him. Red tail Loach is the closest I can get to but his tail is not all that red...more yellow unless he will get the colour back in a day or two.

I would say either a red finned loach (Botia lecontei)
or an orange finned loach (Botia rubripinnis). I am not making up the Botia names, i swear.
Give it a couple of days to colour up.
If your ph is above 7 they may not display their best colours. the clown loach included. They all like their water slightly acidic.

That is a "Botia Modesta".

Not to be trusted with small tetras/danios etc, They hoover them up at night as they are primarily nocturnal.TRUST ME ON THIS ONE, I LOST ABOUT 20 NEONS IN ONE NIGHT.

I have one in with Convicts and a Jack Dempsey. Mine is 7'' at the moment, i have him about 5 years. Very interesting fish to watch. He has a clay tube that he stays in all day and pokes his head out now and again.

Best to give him a piece of bogwood or a tube to hide is at it will stress him out being in the open all the time. That is why he was hiding in the tank.

Smoke me a Kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.

Thanks lads it's good to know what I have.

He has cover under some slate along with my two plecos but some piping would be a good idea as well for the other bottom dwellers.
As for the pH it was rock steady at 7.6 for months but has gone down to 7 in the last 2 weeks. Only difference in the tank was the addition of more air via the venturi of the power head. If it holds at pH7 I shouldn't worry........should I ?

Processor.

PS. Thank God I won't be able to enter a photo of a 7" rubripinnis in the photo comp........ cos I'd only be lying and would probaly get thrown off the forum anyway !!!

I am starting to get the impression that my tank water has traces of some illegal recreational substance that is mellowing my fish.
I know it's early days yet but the Yellow tail seems to be quiet and shy and when he is out and about he just seems to follow the gang as if to say 'can I play too' . ( Oh God I'm hearing voices)

I also have two Pictus who, according to everything I'm told and read, wouldn't mix well with the like of Dannio, Neon and certainly not guppy and molly fry as they would see them as food. But 9 months later they are as happy as a pig in the proverbial. They just hang around with the Dollars and every so often go on a mad dash around the tank to see who wins the race. The fry are all maturing well.

Now had I read up on the Pictus beforehand I would never have got them but I'm glad I did.

Just some of my observations.

hi processor
as i have said countless times FISH DO NOT READ BOOKS!!!
however there are guidelines!! i have lost count of the customers who have "GUPPYS WITH 3 ADULT TIGER BARBS!!" I might add, this can work if they are juvs. but try adding guppys to 3 or more adult tiger barbs n they will usually SHREAD THEM!! or better add more neons to an existing shoal when you have an adult angel etc.... watch them eat all the new fish n the existing ones!!!

Yeah they don't read books alright. That's true.

I give this fella advice from time to time, he rarely listens to me so i've given up at this stage.

He put a Male siamese fighter in a tank with a Large Jewel Cichid, he bought the Jewel Cichlid and told me " I'm gettin into the bigger fish now", so i gave up with him. I told him the fighter would be dead. But he's the expert now so i let him do it to teach him a lesson.

Anyway the fighter is still alive, he reckons he's an expert on tropical fish now.

How the fighter is still alive is beyond me but he didn't read the script.

For a minute there I thought you were talking about me Peter.

I guess that rules out adding the fry to the same tank when they are a bit more mature then or should I wait till their near fully grown ?

Yeah i would hold off on adding them, Botia modesta is a greedy b*stard of an eater. Not sure about Mollies but small tetras stay very low in the tank at night. He just used to pick them off for fun. No wonder he's so big!!
