Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,
I have one too, my guy is about the same size, I've been told they can grow to 12in if everything is right.
my guy doesnt like to come out into the tank area that much, bar to feed he likes to hide in the dark so they will need a cave to grow bigger I'd guess.
I have 2 plecos in the tank so my one wont get much bigger as the space and the 3 bottoms feeders sharing the food means the bigger pleco about 8in will get more than the catfish and smaller pleco 5in.
My fish grew by when the where put in the tank, and i think they are all over a year old now.The more space they have the bigger they will grow, mine are in a 40l hex tank....hopefully when I move to my new 450l they will grow bigger

If he gets to big ur fish shop may be able to rehome him else post it here.

hi
i have one which is about 7 inches,it has slowed down to growing at about 1 inch every six months now.they are sopposed to reach a lenght of 18 inches?but i have seen 14 inch so maybe possible.it would take about 10 years to reach that size anyway.they do well with big cichlids but not with slow moving fish.they will eat neons, tetras and most fish small enough to fit in their mouth mostly in the dark of night.they have great personality and they will learn to come to the top and eat out of your fingers and even let you stroke them.thats my experence with them hopefully this will help

Yes, Mystus leucophasis is also known as the GIANT upside down catfish and does grow to 12 inches long.

Other types of upsidedown catfish such as Synodontis nigriventris only grow to 5 or 6 inches.

IS one myth we could do with out!!!!!! Your big plec is getting the majority of the food all right, but it is stunting the others growth. you would see growth if you slightly in creased food offered.

if the myth were true no one would ever have a fish out grow their tank

Well mine had reached 12" when i got rid of him.
Beautiful animal, but beware, it will eat anything it can fit in its big mouth.
Small fish are only snacks for this creature.

these are one of the nicest catfish ive kept. i have one in my african tank and he has reach about 7 inches. like mossy said it has slowed its growth in the last few months.
mine has developed a taste for fish eggs. only last week i watched him follow a pair of pseudtropheus elongatus around the tank for half an hour as they spawned, i reckon five eggs survived.

Mickey, are you saying that stunting of a fish doesn't ever take place due to small tanks.

Of course it does.

Some fish do grow bigger & faster in larger tanks.

Smoke me a Kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.
