Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Head is melted.

im having a horrid day. I woke up to do my weekly water change..usually do the change and then watch footy for the day! but having looked at my tank i noticed the water level was a good bit off..approx 1/2 inch higher on the left side. i did notice this a couple of months back and thougth to myself "it'll be fine,i'll deal with it a later". Well today for whatever reason(i dont know why consiedering all the rugby was on tv)..I decided i'd level the tank. so 2 hours in i've a massive head ache..i dont know whats goin on ..ive tried try various shims, wedges and ricdiulous jigs to raise the left side of the tank up so levels will be even..but i cant get it just right..there's no adjustable feet on my tank so whenever i change on side the tank becomes unstable and wobbles...so im standing there f'in and blindin' cos im missing the rugby..im very annoyed at this stage...i decided to throw the spirit level on the tank on more time just to have another look.."it's way off". so as im putting the spirit level back on the floor i think to myself, maybe i should check the floor to see what on earth is goin on. it turns out that the tank structure is fine...but the floor has sunk! the (bleep) floor on the left side of my tank sunk approx .5 inch. and there's nothing i can do. I spent last 5 hours completely emptying the tank for nothing! tank is now nice and clean tho!

anyway there you have it...thanks for listening. there should be a ranting/raving section on this forum.

Sounds like your problems are more serious than a lopsided tank if your floor has sunk by half an inch. I'd get that checked out to see what the problem could be. Best of luck, Padraigr:(  :S

Hi there

Are you sure it only happened a while ago, when I put a five footer in a bedroom it was off by at least 2 and a 1/2 inches, back to front.
Turned out, like you, the floor was the culprit, could it have been like this all of the time?

Be very careful about using shims etc, you could end up with an exploder on your Hands.

the floor was always like that..whats really annoying me is,i knew the floor was a little off when i first set the tank up and yet i still went ahead..but no way was it 1/2 inch when i first set the tank up...i remember it being 1mm or 2mm at most..so it definately has progressed. im thinking positive though...its the perfect oportuntiy to head down to wackers and get new fish! new tank fresh water just have to do a quick cycle...i managed to hook my filter(external) to a 30L quarantine tank using the old water...how should i go about cycling the tank now? will the filter make things fly along? or will ihave to wait 2 weeks or so?

Ref the question about cycling. Your filter should be OK once you provide a source of ammonia for it while its hooked up to the Q tank. I guess you will have to think about placing the tank elsewhere in your room. Best of luck.

Hi,

Got a great tip from Darren, empty the contents of your filter, mulm etc into the new setup then put the substrate on top, thereby inoculating the substrate with the Bacteria, then just use your filter in the normal way using some of the water you saved.

Add some safe start too. Ease off on the initial feedings to reduce the chance of a spike etc.
