sand or crushed gravel ??
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi Eric,
Do you mean crushed coral gravel or regular pea gravel? Coral gravel would make the water very hard which would not be suitable for guppies.
I'd probably go with sand, such as clean play sand or "silver sand" which you will get in a lot of shops. I have silver sand in my main tank mixed with about one quarter pea gravel. It looks quite natural and most all my plants are thriving in it. It is quite compacted and detritus just seems to roll along the top of it, even though my filter is not that strong. I haven't needed to disturb it or clean it since I started this particular tank.
Plus I'd imagine that the sand would be closer to what is in the natural habitat of wild guppies.
Rory.

If the gravel is inert it should be fine for guppies.

I use crushed gravel in many of my tanks and it's excellent, especially with U/G filtration.
However, I wouldn't use it with Corys as it is a bit 'sharp-edged' and potentially will cause degradation of their barbules, and while it doesn't cause any real harm to them to be 'barbule-less' I have read that this will result in the females being unable to grasp the pelvic fin of the male, hence making sperm transfer to her eggs all-but impossible.
On top of which, any Corydoras with no barbules looks dreadful - 'incomplete' almost.
So, for Corys etc I would always go for extremely fine 'rounded' Aquarium gravel or Sand (play sand is good - 'search' SAND in 'Seach Forum' above right).
But, whatever you choose, you mustn't scrimp on the washing of it - especially the 'ready-washed' play sand.

Hi ejgibbo
Put some Gravel/Sand into a bucket add water and swirl around your gravel your water will turn "dirty" pour this off and repeat until the water runs off clean, repeat for all your gravel.it sounds and it is extremely boring, but make sure you do a good job on it or you may have cloudy water down the line....preparation is the key here.
