Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

After I started to find out about all their different behaviour intra or extra specific:a new world to explore!!
And it never ends, you think you know something and there's always more:new fish, new plants, new equipment, new technics and so many enthousiasts to have a chat with!
There are so many reasons why I love fishkeeping but that's some of them:)

It's been on and off for me since - tankless for a few years, then three or four tanks on the go, then tankless again. Community tanks, Malawi, Discus, planted, breeding livebearers, breeding Convicts. Most of that was years ago, but I've had some sort of set up for the last three years now and am just starting up my first Marine tank.
What do I love about it? All that; the planning, the research, the imagination in setting up a new tank. Then seeing how it evolves and dealing with the problems that arise.
What else? Oh yeah ... the fish. Anyone remember the display tank in the shop down in Dun Laoighre (was it called Aquaria?). Full of clown loaches as far as I can remember, maybe some silver dollars as well. Awesome.

Here is the reason, i love fish, i studied aquaculture in college, i used to fish 4 to 7 days a week.
It is just in me, have to be around them. Water, nature etc. I love breeding fish and plecs are great fun, really got onto them over the last few years.
but at the same time i love to breed anything , livebearers are great.
the folks that enjoy keeping fish are mostly on the same wavelenght, great fun to chat too.
You can make good friends too.
Its great fun and u always have more to learn, its a very rewarding pastime, when ur fish are happy so are u,, I could and sometimes do watch them swim around the tanks for hours

Ian Morris' display tank in Dun Laoire was the business, I think they were Bala sharks. The big group of large clown loaches was fantastic.
I think you are right, Balas. I think that tank inspired me more than anything. Funny, I can remember him well, but I never knew his name, but Ian Morris must have had great tolerance for the likes of me - a twelve year old who would come into the shop, spend an hour or two looking from tank to tank and leave without spending a penny. I guess that still applies to the good guys working in LFS now. I do remember him sorting me out when I broke a heater. Is Ian still around? In my vague memory he looked a bit like Stephen Rae.
Fishowner - I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes there seems to be a huge disconnect between me and my mates. They like the tank, but they dont really get it. That's why sites like this are so important to us I guess. Though the other day my girlfriend surprised me - I've been buying equipment for changing over to a marine setup, so there are bits and pieces at the side of the sofa - but I haven't gone into detail. The other day when she was hoovering she said "I'll just move the skimmer over here". I was taken aback, I don't even remember telling her that big piece of plastic was called a skimmer. I guess sometimes we don't give the people closest to us enough credit... (or, maybe I don't)...
