Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Costs associated with building a tank

Hi Guys

Didn't want to go sidetracking Puddlefish's informative posts, and with a subtle hint from JohnH ;) I thought I'd start a new thread.

I know some of you have constructed your own tanks, and I'm looking to gleam a bit of information from you.

Pro's?
Con's?
Costs?

Can I just walk into the local glass cutter, lift a bit of glass and with a bit of glue, Bob's your Uncle? (Obviously its not just as easy as that, what I'm getting at is, do I need to ask for a specific type of glass, are there even different types of glass, or is it thicknesses?)

I know the bigger you go, the thicker it should be, but how thick is thick enough? And obviously different places will have different prices, but a rough price guide for what you paid would be great.

I'm probably going to get shot if herself finds out that I'm writing this, I'mm only after binning 2 tanks that I got, but they were broken into bits, through bad handling before I got them.

I'll leave others to answer you first and after that I'll add my ten penn'orth but you really need to give everyone a good idea of what size tank you're looking at building as there is a set glass-thickness-to-tank-size ratio which really needs to be followed - and, by definition the thicker the glass the dearer to material cost will be.

So, what size, please?

John
ps
That wasn't a hint, subtle or otherwise, just a suggestion for a new thread.
(The 'thanks' ps was thanking you for clearing up the misunderstanding with Colin).

Cool cool, as I said, not sure on whats needed.

For the purpose of this exercise, I'll say 4ft long, by 2.5ft wide, by 2 high. Freshwater tank. Stand TBA. Lights TBA.

I'm an Aquarist so being a Glasscutter has it's advantages

For a tank that size you need to consider the safety coefficient i.e. what thickness of glass you need to hold back the immense pressure from that volume of water.
Lets look at the stats.

1219mm x 762mm x 610mm

That throws up respective approx volumes of; 124.63 UK Gallons (471.72 litres)

Now if you look at the Aquarium Glass Thickness Calculator Chart below, you will see that your tank would need to be constructed from either 9 or 12mm glass, with 12mm giving a higher safety
coefficient of 4.0. (Obviously 12mm plate will be more expensive than 9mm) Balls to juggle!

I would then want to brace this size of tank for added safety, Depending on what you want the tank to be used for (i.e. Freshwater or Marines) would probably determine what way you wished to configure your bracing.
If it were for marines then given the fact that the new Metal Halide pendants for a four footer will have two high powered lamps spaced along its length the a wide central brace bar would be the option to go for as no shadows will be cast from an offending glass spar if it were wrongly positioned.

If it was for Freshwater then a narrower double strut configuration, spaced evenly, may be the way to go. This is of course all dependant on your lighting preferences and the need to negate shadows from spoiling the theme you are trying to create.

For the answer to your main question regarding advantages and disadvantages of embarking on such an adventure then one of the first questions to ask yourself would be "Do I have the confidence in my abilities to execute this project.
The glass will be heavy, even one sheet (the finished article will weigh a great deal) You will need assistance.
If you feel you have what it takes then by all means give it a go.
Be prepared for the odd mishap, sods law with these things, not all run smooth.
But when you've finished and have tested the tank then a great deal of satisfaction can be gleaned from saying "I made that"
I hope this was of some help to you.
Regards
C

If you require the cutting list for the above size of aquarium, you first need to know what thickness of glass you wish to use.
I will price up both at work and get back to you.

Again, Puddlefish, genuinely astounded by the depth you go into!

As I said, this is all hypothetical, herself would have a fit if she even knew I was thinking this.

If you could throw together some prices, that'd be great. Trying to figure is it cheaper to buy or build something that size.

I'd like to be able to say, "See that tank. I built that. And it doesn't leak. No thats not a leak, its a ...feature." Kind of thing.

Also to throw into the mix, what about acrylic? Anyone any knowledge of plastics?
