Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Cold water fighter Fish???

Eric, these are tropical Fish, although they could just about survive at room temperature they wouldn't be 'at their best'. Far better would be the good old Paradise Fish (Macropodus Opercularis) which are well-known for their ability to survive and even thrive at lower temperatures.

My theory (which could be a bit off, but here it is anyway) is that most Barbs and the like are frequenters of fast, streamy waterways - often fed from mountain streams. Hence the waters aren't always at the sort of level Equatorial temperatures to be found in the still waters where the likes of Bettas etc would be found.
Therefore with the likes of most Barbs the water temperature can fluctuate by quite a wide range, hence their ability to tolerate both lower and higher temperatures that the mid-twenties (I'm gradually getting the hang of these new-fangled degrees, sizes and distances!). Indeed, many of these Fish can be encouraged to spawn by a sudden water change with that of a lower temperature, it seems to stimulate them - the idea being that you recreate the start of Spring when the ice water in the mountains melts and flushes down to the streams below and this provides the signal for spawning to commence.
This ploy is also very effective with many Catfish, especially Corydoras and allied species.

That answer probably wasn't what you were alluding to at all, but it gave me something to do for a few minutes.

and a friend of a friend has one in a large goldfish bowl , i just assumed there were cold water ones aswell :? , woops :( ,
would a betta be okay with parrot cichlids and angelfish , i highly doubt it though
i seen a thing called a betta condo , but seems kinda cruel because itlooks pretty small .. anyone used these are they big or small ?

There's a bit of a difference between a Fish surviving and it living well.
It will, as stated, survive at room temperature but by no stretch of the imagination could it be said to be living well'.

Have a look at the Paradise, equally nice-looking, equal personality, but will live at much lower temperatures (not merely survive).

Many of the 'Betta Habitations' (condo, no doubt too) are dismal and poor excuses - they offer little or no living space and, for the average person, should be avoided at all costs - in my opinion.

These are lovely Fish and are more deserving of being properly cared-for, and that includes their accommodation!

And, no, parrot 'fish' would make a mess of the Betta's fins, as might Angels, my advice would be to keep them well apart.

mate it's lying out my back the bottom pane is broke, i think woodies are doing the silicone for 7 euro or so and the glass is dirt cheap, i think it's 10gallon, you can have it for free, but the filter might be a while as i'm waiting on the missus to look the other way so i can swindle a few quid and sneak it in

Hey eric,

You were intersted in my Jewel cichlid ages ago... still want him?

I forget how big your tank is but bare in mind he is pretty big and im not sure how he would do with 4 small kribs... Jewels are very aggressive if they dont have the space..

I will prob be heading to aquatic village in the next few weeks so i could meet you in tallaght... PM me if your interested.
