Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Go to www.youtube.com
Top right corner, click create account, fill out the details ect and await the confirmation email, once you click the link in the confirmation email it will take you to Youtube, on the main page there will be an upload option top centre of page. Click and browse for vid.

Link to new account form below. It works out pretty linear as you go through the process.

I thought this was a science 'til I sat down and did it. You just need to click "register" around the top of the page, go through the motions, and when you are logged in just click "upload" and follow the directons. You upload videos by browsing your hard drive.

It was way easier than I had originally expected! ;)

Does this mean I can embed the vids with the you tube player straight onto the forum page as I've seen already in some threads and play them from the board rather than a You Tube link.

Yep, once you upload a vid, it gets processed. When it is ready after a few minutes depending on size, you play the vid on youtube and copy the link from the browser address bar and paste it into the forum post. No embeddng code needed at all.

Nah, it cant be I can mange it and I am a technophobe!

Only killer with YouTube is the time it takes to upload the huge files video generates, especially HD. and the virtual prohibition of using soundtracks...

Time to splash oout on a symmetric connection 9up 9dwn:) My upload is only 256K, weak! yet I have 9m down, annoying as I upload more than I download, upload bandwidth is expensive though.

Convert your avi first to mp4 using a multitude of free conversion software , it reduces your upload time dramatically if losing a tiny bit of quality doesn't worry you.

A large drop in quality:)

for a 6 minute vid with audio it probably has to be around 600MB or higher for a good resolution with todays displays, lower resolutions look manky on a 22" or bigger screen (Clear Closeups and no pixels at far out shots), uncompressed is best if you can wait for the upload the results are worth it, some of the high res stuff is great and makes a world of difference in the video. Me, no patience, always compress:)

So I guess if it is just a misc vid, compress\\convert. If its a more serious project uncompressed high quality would be worth the wait and better for the viewer.

A minimum resolution for a decent quality vid is 720x546 resolution, 1280x720 Very nice and 1680x1080 full HD.

Darragh had some high res shrimp video up on tube, wonder what lenght\size they usually are? Quality was good.

My recent upload was just a min + full 1080P and took hours, I suppose it depends on what one is trying to convey, ie, basic info, if one is looking for the ooh ! factor or looking for Brownie points, either way, it's totally dependent on contention rate, Bandwith and quality of copper in your area, imagine... Copper ! in 2010 ! I see the use of Hi res in Photography for detailing something but video? standard will do for Youtube etc.

I have no contention:) but still a poorly 256k upload at the generosity of UPC, really slow so as you say matey small vids:)
Small critters suffer on those resolutions that is my only complaint. If you want a decent shrimp vid you need to up the size.

Annnd I am really jealous you can record in HD, it makes such a difference when viewing a vid in that res, it provides the needed quality to get a true representation of what you are trying to show. Make some HD vids and even put on a flash key and bring to someone you may know with a fast upload, would love to see some of your setups and fish on high def most definately.

256k upload here, despite promises of whatever eircoms latest jazzy name is for their offering. I usually upload in HD as they are available full screen and also because I don't archive the original footage, it takes up too much space, so I only keep the footage that is uploaded and unless I want to render each clip twice it is easier just to render in high quality and keep that.
