Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all,
does anyone have any experience with this substrate? I'm finding it difficult to find anything useful by googling.

I was hoping to use it for a planted tank for something like Rams or apistos but the one definitive thing i read is that it raises GH, at least initially.

Any advice gratefully received!

Jim.

Sorry , my mistake, Forgot it was Dennerle but my Tanks have no problems and have Plants and fish thriving in it and no changes in Ph or hardness.

Hi Jim. Ive recently setup a soon to be planted tank and am using the earth coloured Denerle. It looks exactly the same as the Mandano but is easier to clean and doesnst get blown around the tank by currents, fish etc as easily as the Mandano does. Im very happy with this substrate and it looks so natural its unreal but Im sure the same effect is possible from the Mandano but thought I would give you something else to think about :) . Oh, just to add, it might be a little more expensive than the mandano but only by a few Euros or so.

Thanks Jay and Kev.

Unfortunately I've already bought the manado, just began to have second thoughts when I googled looking for info on how to clean it.

Is it worth trying to return it and swap for dennerle?

To be honest Jim, I wouldnt. Just give it a good rinse under flowing water a couple of times and that should do the trick. Just keep any powerheads or filter return outlets pointed away from the substrate and you will be fine. The stuff looks great and Im sure you will be happy with it when its in the tank.

Just pop in some fine Filter floss that will strip any suspended dust particles and you'll be good to go.

Will do. I've a tetratec 1200 going on it and a big bag of spare floss for precisely that purpose on all new cycles.

Thanks again guys

Set this up last night - rinsed the manado 5kg at a time - 3 rinses per load.

There wasn't anymore sediment in the water than with pea gravel, whole tank is completely clear this evening. you guys were right - the stuff looks great - thanks again!

I use the JBL stuff.
I find it a great substrate.....but the washing is the biggest problem as is the not letting too much of it get inside the filter.

I don't have it in all tanks, but it is tanks with Discus, Pacu, cory's, geophagus, knife fish, hatchet fish, polypterus, uaru....no problems.

Once the stuff is cleaned properly it is great at helping keep a tank very clear. (but take care with magnetic algae cleaners.....you may end up with nice little scours in the glass)
