Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Last edit: 27 Oct 2010 11:36 by dar (darren curry). Reason: edited for suggesting there might be reputable sellers abroad, online. which i should know better seeing as i dont shop in non sponsors myself, and i don't agree with shopping online for livestock

To bring fish in from such countries you will need a license.
Then there is a minimum order size, which is a lot more than many of us can handle.
Theres a fee per box, often €10-15,then several hundred euros freight, vet fees when they arrive in Europe(Frankfurt)of aprox €120,a fuel surcharge,a handling fee at Dublin Airport, and of course don't forget VAT putting 21% on the lot. Also paperwork fees.
So you see that Corydoras axelrodi at 7c and L200 at $7 all of a sudden become a bit more expensive.

As for ordering from retil sites in your own country,I would rather see the fish first.Even if I know the shop to be reputable, some still have their bad days.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

Stuff comes from Czech republic all of the time, hardly a warmer climate, very little comes directly to us from source, nearly always through a third Party.

i wonder wat percentage comes from the czech republic, and are they strictly a fish farming country for mass breeding and export of tank/farm raised fish, or do they import stock for distribution trough out the continent

This, and similar associated questions have been asked before - look in the archives.
However, it seems hardly fair to the shops who trouble to sponsor the Clubs and Club members to be reading any replies.
Any specific replies, please do it by PM - which is a reasonable request.

I think your comments are only fair John,

I'd hate to be the one on the receiving end of a Bag of dead or dying Live stock AND the one responsible for making a decision on what to keep or what to put into a Hospital tank and so on.

Lfs owners take the risks as they don't get to see the stock they are buying and get the grief for trying to recoup their losses both in the way of stock and time wasted.

Just a thought, would anyone be interested in breaking down the procedure that leads us to saleable live stock in the LFS, everything from where to source the Fish etc, no names required , just a basic idea.. Maybe it would make people realise it isn't just a case of place an order and hope for the best. For instance, last Winter was a major screw-up where stock was left in limbo and LFS owners were left worrying.
