Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Finish the surround, and all the rock and pipe work, and all the little bits and pieces.
Get the filter running, and if you can, some media from another pond.
Getting late in the year, for adding fish, so try and get a couple of fish from a pond .

Pity I can't put in the fish soon I was only going to put in the few I have in my cold water tank and take them back out and into the 800L for the winter I can keep that in a shed. Also can I use plants from a old disused canal there is one beside me with lots of nice plants

That would be ok.
They would need the summer to acclimatise to being outside.
Canal plants would be fine, just rinse them first to remove bugs or unwanted guests

From this

To this

Filter is not overflowing but I am going to put another pipe for a overflow like was said from earlier
I have most work done and I am off for a walk down the old closed kilbeggan canal hopefully I get some nice plants for free.
I will need someone that's good with ground work and I need the crazy pavement cemented into place.
Any volunteer I pay good money and dinner and tea will be included :)

I would be up like a shot to help but tullamore is a bit of a spin from my house.

For my pond i used organic compost as substrate , i planted my plants on 3 different levels and once they were settled, i covered the substrate with gravel to stop it floating around. The plants will take a year or so to start to grow once they have been moved to the pond , there will be no need to add any more ferts as the fish waste will probably be enough to keep the plants healthy.

Although I hold crusty's advice with the highest regard , i would add fish now. It will take them only a short time to get acclimatised to the water and they will help the filter mature over the winter. 3 or 4 small goldies would do the trick and by next summer you can stick some foot long Koi in there lol.Remember though if you add fish now DO NOT FEED THEM ONCE THE TEMPATURE GOES BELOW 5 DEG'S. Pond fish do not eat during the winter months , it is too cold for them to digest food and it will most likely kill them.

Stuart.

Thanks for the advice I have 8 cold water fish in a 120L and I love to move them the only thing I don't want to see happening is for them to die I have them now since my first tank. I will take my time and hopefully get everything right. I have more recyclable bits coming I will build a small wooden fence around the paving hopefully it will keep out the dogs. I don't mind spending money coming near to this project but I would love to show people that anything can be done if you put your mind to it.
