Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I think this is pretty basic and should exist everywhere but doesn't seem so easy...so does anybody know where I can find a plain black or dark blue background for the tank?

Found one at amazon but wanted to know if it's possible getting them in Ireland.

Something like Jeff's one would be fantastic

Thanks

Howye I find them backgrounds that are sold in the shops are crap for many reasons

All my tanks would have been painted with a small roller (for gloss)(smooth) 3 coats rustins blackboard paint very cheap and very easy to do and easy to remove plus no smell of paint

Thanks Stem, when I bough mine they didn't have any plain so I bought the one I have now because was that or looking at the wall, but I don't really like it, the blue is not dark enough and when the yellow shrimps are in the background plants I can't see them at first sight. If is double sided blue and black is the same I saw at amazon.

Jeff problem is my tank is very close to the wall and I can't move it, but in future I will paint it.

Theirs paint rollers that are called radiator (rad) rollers basically for getting behind radiators short ones long ones the short ones are fine and cheap just use a sweeping brush handle (pole) for distance if needed
Tanks can be as close as 1" to the wall and still be painted you will hit the wall but sure you'll never see it and it can be repainted if the tank is to be moved

If your still not convinced lol petstop carrigmines always seem to have the other stuff
but the main thing I hate about that is you get a mirror like affect from it and it just looks to fake

Yes Great idea from Jeff, Painting black is the best way, I have a black background on mine and although I does look good, I find sometimes theres an unnatural look, Might paint mine soon thanks for the idea Jeff :)

I was very hesitant when I was told about doing this but it was surprisingly easy and turned out great :)

Wish I could do as Jeff says but since I don't have nearly an inch maybe I could use some black construction paper or posterboard which I think are pretty brightless, but it will need some plastic cover to avoid getting damage by any water drop.

If ya can't get in to paint it....
Try some black card from easons or any other retailer....
Slap it on the front, trim it up and tape it to the rear

Won't look as good
But will work

Hammie looked at easons website but all they have are books.
For the ones that can paint it have a look on eggshell paint, is pretty matte and I think it looks great.

Ah yeh the Eason's website is crap, but they do sell acrylic paints, blackboard paints, black paper, posterboard etc. and lots more.

Most Hobby shops would sell these types of things aswell.

I came across these earlier for a euro each.....110cm x 45cm roll with sticky back.

Looks really good but iphone picture with sun coming through the window doesn't do it justice in these pics

I got it in Euro Giant in Northside shopping centre in coolock, and these shops like this one and Dealz etc. are all over the place but I have just noticed that you are in Foxrock and I would have no idea were there would be one over your way sorry.........If you would have any reason to go to Artane Aquatics,Northside shopping centre is just 2 minutes up the road from it,or for any reason you would be in the Santry area, you are welcome to the two that I have here, but i'd say the chances of that are quite remote ha.

Guys I found this black adhesive foil at woodies (the adhesive is on the other side but I put it with tape), is like velvet so it doesn't bright at all. It's in rolls of 1 meter large x 45 centimeters wide (less that 6€)

You can see the difference

Old backgroung

New one

Also you can see my snails's harvesting of the utricularia :S
