Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

August/September Video Round.

By request we are going to run the next Round as a Video Competition, generously sponsored by Seahorse Aquariums, Ballymount.
We found that trying to keep the anonymity of entrants became all-but impossible but will ask Kealan (of the afore-mentioned Sponsor) to adjudicate, since he will - I know - judge the entries impartially.

It was decided - since taking, editing etc of a video is a bit more time-consuming than merely taking and sending in a photo - that we will let this one run for the remainder of August and the whole of September.

Here's a link to the last time we attempted this project:

www.irishfishkeepers.com/forum/37-compet...time-to-give-it-a-go

As you will see, it wasn't the most successful venture we embarked upon, but five years along - and with the advent of video-taking facilities on just about all phones now - it's felt it would be worth another try.

Now follows...(yet another) 'copy-and-paste' from the original announcement giving a bit of an idea of the original attempt:

"Here is a brief rundown of the Rules (such as they are) - we'll run this until the end of May and see whether it has been any sort of success...or a dismal failure.

Please restrict the video length to a minute, or shorter.
The stipulation is that it has not been shown on this - or any other Forum or website (so must be an entirely new clip, although the subject matter can have appeared previously - just not the competition entry video clip).

The subject matter must be Fish, or Fish-related.

One entry per Forum member.

No 'pro' software effect to be used - better explanation to follow, along with other 'rules' as and when we think about this a bit more.

Entries should be sent to

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

in the form of a url link to the Hosting site of your choice (Youtube, photobucket etc).

I'll ask Daragh Owens to write a small addition to this which will outline the way to upload your video and obtain the url to forward.
Hopefully he will be covering taking Videos in his talk at next Tuesday's meeting - so another reason why it shouldn't be missed!

This competition is kindly being sponsored by Maidenhead Aquatics, Carlow and for this inaugural round it has been decided that Rob (Sandtiger) from there will adjudicate all the entries. This may change with future rounds but it is felt that as the sponsor will be donating the Prize it's only fair that they get an input into the competition rather than merely doleing it out.

John

So dust off the Video Cameras (or, in my case, find out how it works) and get filming".

If you follow the link (above) you'll see the follow-up posts which helped clarify things somewhat - plus Daragh Owens' advice on getting your video onto Youtube.

Obviously the prize donor has changed - not least because Maidenhead Aquatics are no longer operating in The Republic, also Daragh's talk on taking videos at the club meeting was five years ago - so that bit can also be disregarded.

Anyway - as usual - the thread will be 'open' for now, but 'locked' once the first entry arrives.

Any questions, please ask - I'll try my best to answer them.

Good luck everyone - please do enter though.

My grandaughter knows more than me

I wouldn't doubt that she knows more than me too!
Anyway - this is even more straightforward than posting pictures - upload your video (one minute maximum) onto youtube then send in the link (in the address bar) to the competition address then the rest becomes my problem. (Hark at me - trying to make it sound as though I'm a computer whizz-kid) but it really is simple - take a look at Daragh's little tutorial within the link posted - honestly, if I can do it, anyone can!

Look, it is with a great deal of regret that this video round seems to have failed.

Now, it could be that the recent Forum software problems have deterred some of you from entering but I can hardly go back to Seahorse Aquariums with just two videos and expect them to still contribute the prize voucher.

It is proposed, therefore, to keep the round open until we get at least a dozen entries and, if these aren't forthcoming fairly soon, the only thing we can do will be to completely abandon it. A real shame, but it must be seen as the only viable option.

In the worst case scenario (if the round has to be abandoned) I will feel especially sorry for the two people who have taken the time and trouble to submit entries, but hopefully they'll understand why this decision has had to be made (if it has to).

OK, regrettably this (extended) round has had to be cancelled due to lack of interest - we gave it a good try though.

We'll start anew at the beginning of November - to run throughout the whole of November, but as an 'ordinary' Photocompetition.

Sorry that this has had to happen, but I can hardly approach Seahorse Aquariums to furnish a prize for only three entries - I hope you'll all understand.
