Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hello one and all - we have decided to have a short Competition for the week between Christmas and the New Year.
Prize will be a €50 voucher, as usual, with the donor to be announced.
So please send your entries (Fish or Fish-related) to
This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
As this is only a short timescale competition the entries will be accepted up until midnight on January 1, 2011 (1/1/11) so dust off those cameras (or, for those of you lucky enough to have been given one as a Christmas gift, find out how they work!).
Best of luck to all of you.

Since we last used it photobucket has made 'improvements' and now will not recognise some of the formats entries are getting sent as.
Until this can be sorted out (or we find a different image hosting site) could you please send entries as 'attachments' to your email to
This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Preferably in JPEG form.
Sorry for the inconvenience - people who have already sent entries have been notified by PM.

I am having no picture format issues with Photobucket at all. If your PC cannot identify the image properly that may be an issue as the PBucket website needs that information provided by your PC to identify the picture.

It's probably fine, just different - for an old codger like yours truly to figure out.
It's OK now, your previous entry got converted somehow to a strange format along the way - but now I have the PB code I'm racing!!!

Cheers,
John

I have managed to re-size some of the images which had previously appeared a bit on the small size in order that all the entries look more or less the same size now.

What pixel or cm size would you recommend is submitted?

They get resized when uploaded to photobucket I think, so as long as the file size is 1MB or under it should be fine.

Nope. Thr file size has no real bearing on the image size per se.
A 1 Meg file straight from my one camera (16-bit, 300 dpi) is an image about an inch long (and if scaled up to be seen on the forum would be seen as 20 big pixels!); a 1 meg file straight from my cheap compact (8-bit, 72 dpi) would be over 10 inches long.
It's to do with resolution and pixel proportions when scaling up or down.

Dude you aint gettin me, the image is reduced in sze, pixel w and h to something like 300x100 but the image has to be less that 1MB to enter the comp, I think it is 1MB, nothing to do with image size v file size were my comments.

And Nope dpi is an old term applied to everything resolution related these days, when you view an image on your screen from a camera pic you took, you are seeing ppi not dpi, as this was an output of print quality and still is, what we are talking is PPI, PPI will affect the output size of the file. You may look at a pickture on a screen with less PPI than the actual dpi output when you print off the picture, DPI does not affect digital images, only ppi, ppi is indeed relative to file size.

I know the difference, I should working in IT for 7 years:laugh:
