Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I wasn't able to get entries re-posted today...we're trying a different hosting site which seems to give much better results than the 'new improved' Photobucket, we did a whole pile of experimenting last night and this is, I'm convinced, the 'way to go'.
The plan is to try to remedy the whole thing tomorrow and add the new entries.
All the very best to you all for 2011

Canon pro zoom lenses are white, marketing idea apparently, so you can see them at sports events!

That Cannon was a "1D MkIIN" body, 1.6 extender, 2.0 extender and "L300mm f4 IS" lens with becomes f8 with the two extenders. Only good for shooting the moon with the aid of a concrete tripod!

Suppose you have some great shots taken with that monster you may show us one day?

Just the one I kept, it is not a practical set-up.
I am going off topic a bit, I might be the first ban of the New Year
Daragh
Eh John, what do you reckon, a pass seeing as it is the new year.
Cool picture, not entirely off topic being a photo competition thread. You may even win:)

But that is a "fishy" entry.
And on that note I think I should leave....

My Killifish pic is now out of focus!
or am I still looking through the bottom of a beer glass
I thought that was what you had as a camera lens!
;o)
I'm afraid all previously-entered pictures had to be re-sized and were degraded as a result.
Some time this afternoon should see a vast improvement all round.

I found Postimage.org great, lets you choose full size or select a screen size to resize pictures when uploading. Photobucket butchers photos unless you got a paid for account. Postimage images can be posted as thumbnails which link to the full size photo giving obviously the best representation of our photos to vote on, though camera quality will play a significant factor in deciding a winner.

Nearly done - I hope you'll agree that the second image of each of the ones 'modified' so far are improvements on the photobucket 'new and improved' service.
I have a couple more to do but anything subsequent not duplicated are entries received after we abandoned photobucket, using the new server.
John
ps.
If anyone's submission might not have appeared please re-send it to me since this has all become a little 'muddled' with the mess-up with photobucket.

John
What pixel or cm size would you recommend is submitted?
They get resized when uploaded to photobucket I think, so as long as the file size is 1MB or under it should be fine.
mark
Nope. Thr file size has no real bearing on the image size per se.
A 1 Meg file straight from my one camera (16-bit, 300 dpi) is an image about an inch long (and if scaled up to be seen on the forum would be seen as 20 big pixels!); a 1 meg file straight from my cheap compact (8-bit, 72 dpi) would be over 10 inches long.
It's to do with resolution and pixel proportions when scaling up or down.
ian
Sorry for not replying to this sooner...with the new hosting site the maximum file size is 5mb, which gets reduced when they make it available for format use.
Hope this helps.

Submissions over (unless something has arrived in my inbox before the deadline).
I'll send out the voting instructions in a few days - possibly even tomorrow! (Will wonders ever cease?).
I do regret the problems which the previous host site caused us and apologise for the hassle, but I'll get everything sorted properly before starting a new competition (this was very much an 'impromptu' affair).
Please don't vote until requested to do so as any votes arriving before the 'invitation' will not count.
Good luck to all entrants.

So, firstly, please look at the rules for voting and send your vote to me in the form of a PM.
I would just remind everyone that the deal here is that no-one votes for their own entry and I will send out a reminder to all registered members to vote.
Voting will cease on Saturday at midnight and I will try to get the results ready in order to announce the result some time on Sunday.
Good luck to all who entered.

The voting closed Midnight yesterday (Saturday) so speculate away - I'm just collating the votes now.
I'll give you a little clue - it wasn't #1 (my picture, which incidentally - and fully deserved - got not one vote (not for the first time)

Back presently.
