Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Newbie here,1st tank and its 500 litres.

I didnt do that much, except from the tea making and the picture taking. All the credit does go to my girlfriend, because if I had to do this on my own,I rekon the tank would be in bits by now.

I was shown today,by my girlfriend, how to do the monthly re-calibration of the PH and temperature sensors for the CO2 kit.

Its sounds all mad complicated, but in reality its very easy and simple.

Welcome PJD30,
Lovely tank. Great when the family take a keen interest and want to be involved.
I have just ordered a custom build Clearseal 5' tank , bit dearer that your one and no equipment included. What are the dimensions on your new tank. I'm curious as to the lighting you are using. I'm looking to get 2 x 4' 45W T5s for my new 5'.
Some of the more experienced guys on the forum should be able to advise on the best lighting requirements seen as you will be doing a large planted setup.

Keep the pictures coming as things develop.

PJD30,
I missed some of the later treads to your entry.
The tank progress looks great.
Can you pm me where you get the T5 reflectors.
Looking at your setup I cannot wait to get delivery of my Clearseal 5' and get started.

Sean,
I will be getting the lighting in Seahorse .
I was looking at getting the Arcadia Ultra Seal Electronic Controller as this can take 2 x 54w T5s .
The controller is waterproof so I will attach it to the back inside of the Clearseal hood.
I was looking at using one Color and one Natur 4 foot 54w T5 bulb. I still do not know where to source individual reflectors for the 4 foot T5s
Let me know what you decide on how it works out.
I ws told that going for 4 x T5s would require the purchase of an expensive sealed lighting unit. Talk to the guys in Seahorse on your requirements.

arcadia do very nice reflector units although i think seperate ballasts are better if something goes wrong. for a heavily planted tank and co2 i'd recommend 4x 54w t5's, i have 2x54w over a 4' tank with no ferts or co2 and only low light plants grow well. you could have 2 sets of twin lights, one coming on for 2 hrs before the next come on, and going off 2hrs earlier than the others so the full 216w aren't coming on in one burst and each bulb is not on so long (ie 10hrs light but only 6 of them overlap for a "high noon" lighting).
for plants, the colour bulbs are no good. arcadia plant pro are very good and good price if you can find them (i think i got mine in aquatic village and petmania did do them 2 yrs ago when i was looking)
