Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

the photo will give you a good idea of what i am doing i know plywood would be better but i am happy with the way things are going.

Hi James The stand your building looks very impressive best of lick with it. And its fantastic that the mdf is water proofed, sounds perfect.

I have no personal experience yet of external filters but I am looking into them for my new build/project and saw some product reviews online for the different ones available. There was a number of very satisfied customers but also a number of complaints about Eheim regarding leaks, and apparently they are expensive for parts. I would set it up in some sort of container to make sure if there is a leak it wont destroy everything.

Regarding the 2 x 300W heaters (they say) this is a good set up as if a heater fails the other one will maintain the temperature. But I havent figured out yet how you would know if one had failed

I might use one of my own aps 2000 filter on this tank
After reading up on the emehi 2227 they are quite old and are only good for 350L
I have the aps setup with a inline heater so I will only need one 300w in the tank.
I been working nights so work is slow hopefully next week all will be ready to add water

It has been hard to find the time over the Christmas to work on this project
but here are some updates the unit is near finished and once its finished its only a matter of filling the tank with water heating and adding fish. I have both filters running 4 weeks now on the 350L so they will be ready.

I still haven't decide on two doors in the middle or one closed panel that can only be open with a screw driver the big test will be when a full tank of water is up on the unit I might have to allow for some work to be done on the doors

Like others have said I'd be worried about the mdf, it's pretty much paper glued together.

To be honest I'd pull that apart & use chipboard instead of mdf, you can get an 8x4 laminated sheet for about €30, the iron on edging with glue a few quid more.
If you use that mdf your going to have to waterproof it, all of it, especially the edges. If a little splash of water hits mdf a few times, the mdf starts absorbing it like a sponge.

Nice tank btw :cheer:

I have taught about this long and hard tbh I am really on a right budget
We have 4 kids and one on the way so I have to use this for now. If I did have enough money
I would just buy a unit and save all the hassle
The mdf was used as counter top and laminated and water proof so I was going to do the same
Here at home. The good thing about this unit is when I have money I can take it apart and leave the tank sitting on the frame
And start all over with chipboard.

I get it, the missus won't let you waste anymore money :P

Your cabinet will work fine once you keep it dry, you could get years out of it.

Lol you could say that but on a more serious note I have to watch the penny's
I know there is plenty of people with very little money for big fish tanks so hopefully when I am finished this project it
Might inspire others to follow my footstep.
I seen a 6ft tank for sale in Laois and I'd say with a DIY unit it could be done for 250 just for glass tank and unit.
It's a pity my DIY skills are not better lol but I get it done soon

Agreed. If you had a choice in the matter you wouldn't use mdf at all but I believe most stand tanks from major brands are just that - I could be wrong but I don't think so....the jewel aquarium I had a few years back looked like coated mdf and one leg started to bow. Nothing a length of 2x1 inside didn't fix and that was after years.

The clear seal I now own also looks like coated mdf too and it's an expensive tank and stand....I think once its kept as dry as possible it will last for years....it looks fantastic James and wish I had an ounce of your DIY skills....

Looking forward to seeing the tank filled and on its new pride of place :)

Keep up the pics.....

My DIY is only ok compared to some of the other units I seen built here
I like to keep things simple if I had more money I splash out and buy expensive timber for the unit but when you have 4 kids and one on the way its hard to have money. One big problem was tools I would love to have some carpenter tools to make things handier I just have a hand saw one jig saw and a power drill

This just needs a bit of tidying I could do with a wood plain to shave a few mm off the doors they are a very tight fit it will get one final coat of paint. Hopefully I have the tank in place tonight then I start work on hanging the light unit. My idea will be like a street lamp but you won't see the pole for holding the light it will look like its floating over the tank.

Can anyone tell me if its bad to use some warm water when filling a big tank the cold water is ice cold here lately and I was thinking it take quite a while to heat a 6ft tank

Should you use hot water tap or not?
The million € Question! This one is a bit like religion or politics it an age old debate and never are all going to agree.
Yes I use the hot water tap when doing water changes because major temperature fluctuation is going to stress out fish.
But I built my house 10yrs ago and as a "fish keeper" I made sure there was no Copper in the plumbing. The holding tanks in the attic are plastic, the water immersion tank is stainless steel and all plumbing pipe work is plastic also.
Apparently as the hot water is sitting for long periods in your house at a time there is a leaching of copper into the water (as most older houses are plumbed wit a copper immersion tank and pipework) and this is a serious toxin for fish.
In my previous house this was the situation so to get around it I used to boil a large saucepan of water and add a jug of it to each bucket of cold water before adding it to the tank. Yes I can hear you all, with large tanks say this would take all day to get a water change done, but for me at the time it was not such a large tank.
Having said all that I have seen online the "mentors / experts" doing water changes using the hot water tap in both the UK and the US without negative consequences.
Hope this helps!

James

I know plenty of lads keeping fish for years that will use tepid water from the tap
I also know several that would freak out if you even mentioned considering doing this......

A whole topic of debate within itself........

My advice, fill the tank from buckets kept at room temp overnight....

I use 96litre storage containers on wheels and leave the water overnight then syphon/pump the water in..

much better than using "COLD" tap water as less of a fluctuation during large water changes
