Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Pleco and cichlids?

Hi folks, just wondering if it is possible for egg laying cichlids to breed with a pleco in the tank(260 litres) or will the pleco always end up eating the eggs.
Also are convict cichlids to aggresive to mix with the more peaceful varities of Africans?

Thanks for any replies.

Hey ringer,

Yes they will breed.....but they may loose the first 2 or 3 batches of eggs due to inexperience but believe me the more they spawn the more protective they get.

I have a 35cm pleco in with SA cichlids half his size and they are well able for him. It's the sneaky loaches that are constantly going for the eggs.

As for mixing, IMO I wouldn't. I keep both... and the SA tank water is kept at a Ph of 7 where my African is kept at a Ph of 8.2

Hope this helps.

Mark

Hi,

What kind of egg laying cichlids are we talking about?
The likes of Convicts would probably kill any pleco that tried to eat their eggs. Convicts are headbangers..

I wouldn't mix them with Africans myself though I do know someone that did it & hadn't got any problems.

The problems happen if they are trying to breed & defend eggs/young in a mixed tank, there will be warfare.

What kind of Africans were you thinking of?

Cheers,
Patrick

I have a pair of 1 year old angels and a 5\" plec in a 90L. They have spawned about 5 times so far but 4 of those times I found 'Deco the Pleco' looking rather fat the following morning...

They actually spawned again this morning. I'm going to give Deco another algae pellet when I'm going to bed and hope that reduces his appetite but I have my doubts... I will post again tomorrow with the results.

I fed the Plec 3 times last night to try and stuff him so he'd get lazy...but within 10 min of the lights being off he was on his way twoards the Angels who seemed oblivious to his movements. Even with the room light on they drifted off to sleep. It was a bit like watching a cheap production of Jaws.

End Result = No Eggs This Morning.

Next time I'll probably try a home made tank divider for a few days during the spawning...

I have two juvenille rusty plecos in a 450L tank with 35 Cichlids and whereas in the beginning they would happily come out and suction clean the glass and rock etc they quickly decided to hide and fort he last three months they have buried themselves under the rock and never come out, certainly not in daylight or when the aquarium is lit. I thought at one stage they had both been eaten but have since located their seperate hidey holes.

They seem to be surviving so I guess they must be coming out to feed at night? What is likely to happen when they out grow their hidey holes? They are about 4-5 months old now so only around 8cm long.
